I work at a museum and appreciate the challenges in using collections to flesh out the history of a people. This museum really has some exceptional collections and is well worth the visit, but so much more could be done to enhance the visitor experience. The prehistoric material was particularly poorly exhibited with numerous horizontal glass shelves of stuff, with... More

If you are interested in the history of Finland, and by that I mean the history of the country before it became a country in 1917-18, then this place is worth visiting. There are artefacts from all periods of history. The current exhibition on the 20th century (ie almost the whole history of Finland as an independent state) is worth... More

Small museum. The main exhibition was not that interesting. The most interesting thing is the magnificient ceiling painting in the entrance hall.

The most important part of the collection (prehistory) is presented in a old fashioned 19° century museum style. Although the collection contains some very nice objects, this museum has no narrative, does not tell a story.

A nice place to visit for those who are interested in the history of Finland. Personally, I found the exhibitions about Finland's early history rather boring, but that was only a matter of taste - the museum had a lot to see. The service was friendly and good. The only disappointment was that they kept the shop closed for one... More

I stopped in to check out the museum on a cold afternoon while walking back to the city centre from the Sibelius Monument. After depositing my outer garments in a locker, I was dismayed that it was physically cold in the building. Lots of encased exhibition pieces with accompanying information, but this is the first museum I've ever been to... More

We were here in December and the place was still full. This museum contains a bunch of historical artifacts from the country's natural history. There's a lot to read and see so allow at least 2-3 hours. You could also blow thru it in about an hour if you're tight for time. The building is a lovely edifice up on... More

It was okay. Interesting insights into Finnish history and lovely building. Everything was just in glass cases mainly, very old style. Could be much more interactive. I got free entry including locker with a purchased Helsinki Card.

I am into 9th -10th history, so I loved this museum. I took all the photos I could and if I am ever back in Helsinki I will visit again.

This is a good museum to visit if you like to learn about the city and country of Helsinki/Finland. It covers right back from pre-history up to modern day. There's a reasonable amount of reading with the exhibits but all of it was in English and it complemented the physical exhibits well. A lot of the exhibits were very intresting... More
