Because I was in a bit of a hurry I didn't get to spend too much time inside, but I could get a general feel of the museum. It covers the history of Finland and the neighboring region pretty well, even the more recent to contemporary periods. There are displays with a lot of objects that help the visitor understand... On Fridays after 4pm, entry is free. I spent 90 minutes wandering around before my bus to the airport and managed to cover the entire building, which was surprising. The signs I read were in unusually good English and informative but rather dull. The collection was indistinguishable from most any other history museum I've been to, but unlike the better... More

Big beautiful building from the outside and just as beautiful from the inside. The staff were friendly and helpful when entering the building and directed us to the start of our tour of the museum. The tour is divided into separate time zones and categories starting with 4000bc up to the last few decades. Walking through the museum you gain... More

I was lucky to visit it at the time of exhibition "Alexander III and Finland"! I liked it, but even more I liked the architecture of the building!

Museum gives you an overview of Finland’s history, exhibition is made so you walk through all different stages – stone Age, different rulers, church influence, independence etc. You’ll get full instructions where and how to move at the entrance It was quite interesting and there’s a lot to see. I expected a bit more interactive approach here and there but... More

I'm not a very big history fan, but I was in the area and decided to check it out- and I'm glad I did! The museum itself isn't gigantic, but there's definitely a lot to see, and I found it all very interesting. I learned a lot of Finnish history going through here, and found it all pretty interesting. You... More

This museum alone is the reason to include Helsinki on ur Nordic tour, in and of itself. A 10,000 year old fishing net as an amuse? They do much better job than the Danes at characterizing the March of history, especially during the post Viking and pre Reformation years.

Being Finnish-Canadian, I wanted to make sure that I visited this museum before I flew home to Canada. I was not disappointed. It is laid out as a traditional museum and may be a little dull for young children. The visit to the museum definitely it opened my eyes to the rich history of my ancestors. It was amazing to... I see mixed reviews on TA now about this place but admit I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Easily accessible by trams 4,7,10 and worth a visit just to see the bear statue at the entrance and the amazing entrance hall! We, my wife and I, missed out the whole prehistoric section, but took in all the national costumes,... More

This is a gem of a museum. The history of Finland is organized in sections, like a working timeline. Further, each section has an explanation of a paragraph or two long which speaks to the contents of the room and their overall importance to that time period and how it effected the country. Thank you for the English translations!
