You get here on a ferry, on the way back we had an amazing view of the sunset on Helsinki. The island is lovely, lots of grassy hills and windy places.

Have just returned from a memorable mid January trip to Helsinki, Suomenllina being one of the highlights' A very short 15 minute ice crunching ferry journey from Market Square and you're there. Steeped in history, with buildings and ramparts ranging from late 18th century to fairly recent additions. All buildings and displays are well signposted and documented in multilingual notices/boards.... More

I was at suomenlinna in the winter, so I saw the island full of snow, but its a beautiful sight, specially the south area, where you can see the open sea. The Sea was frozen and it was a good experience. I was there with a finnish friend traht explain all the history of suomenlinna, and teach us all the... More

We were lucky enough to have fair weather when visiting. The boat over is quick and you can get your tickets in the machines or the office. Grab yourself a map and walk around at your leisure. The buildings have a plaque on the outside explaining what it is etc. People still reside on this quaint little island and not... More

We spent several hours on this little island. Lots of historic sights to see in an easy to understand format. Also enjoyed the ferry ride over. Cute little places to eat and lots of pretty sights for pictures. This is worth a 1/2 day. Gift shop at the museum was full of unique, small gifts to bring home. You can... More

If you stay more than half a day in Helsinki you must go to Suomenlinna. Beware that in january though a lot of places are closed. But still take the chance to go there and walk around.

One of the most interesting tourist attraction in Helsinki. Only accessible on see. The easiest way to go there by ferry from Market Square. The fortress construction has begun when Finland was part of The Kingdom of Sweden later became Russian naval base. Winter time could be windy and slippery , so be prepared because the visitors explore the islands... More

I caught the ferry here with some Helsinki friends, on their suggestion. We went in January so it was snowing and cold but I think that added to the experience. The fortress was deserted which made it seem even more abandoned and historic. We had a great day exploring, climbing the hills and walls and walking through the tunnels. Make... More
