Suomenlinna is a fortress on an island near Helsinki. It was an easy ferry ride from market square. It was freezing and windy when I went to visit, but the museum was great and I enjoyed walking around the island. I bet it is spectacular in the summer!

Enjoyed watching the huge ferries 'squeezing' through the narrow openings to dock in Helsinki. We sat down on the walls at the big gates, and just enjoyed the sights and sounds.

We enjoyed walking through Finland's living history. Beautiful! The fortress was interesting and have a taste of the beginnings of history.

Go here on a summer day, take picknick stuff and swimming gear, good shoes and some adventure spirit. The island is beautiful, unique. Your kids would love it, I did, as a child. If you fancy local beer, there is a brewery on the island or if a secluded café is more to your style, go look for the Piper... More

If you want to escape and have a little different view of Helsinki and very much true face of Finland , take the ferry from market square to Fortress of Suomenlinna and spend a few hours in the middle of nature and history, at the seaside. Look and hear the history talking at the fortress You can also have very... More

If you love crowded ferries, drunken people, cold winds, then this is the place to be. Otherwise skip this one and stay in the city.

An amazing place just a 20-minute ferry ride away from the city centre. It's a beautiful place for a walk, for people interested in history, for children, a nice place on a summer day to have a picnic. Suomenlinna offers it all. For the picnic, go to the rocks on the southernmost island just by the sea, enjoy the sun... More

Fortress from the time when Finland was part of Sweden and Russia. Several museums and nice restaurants. When the weather is good there are large park areas to picnic and small beaches. Beautiful view to the sea. When big ships are passing the narrow channel almost hitting the shore is something to see. Take a guided tour (available in several... More

In summertime take TJ-line ferry from The Wholesale Market (Kauppatori) that has two stops in the opposite side of island compared to main ferry. You see nicer views and can buy beverages (including alcohol) on the way and arrive right beside the fortress. Inside the fortress there's nice park and in the middle of it cafe Piper. Second stop of... More

Excellent place to experience the history of Swedish Finland in 18th and 19th centuries. You can walk around and see also the old walls with canons directing to the sea towards Russian fleet. There are a good museum of commander Ehrenswärds life and duties in Sveaborg (name of the fortress before the independence of Finland. Take a ferry from Central... More
