You couldn't actually get into the castle building on the morning I went (in mid-October), except for the central courtyard, but it was still worth going for the gardens, the green lawns, and the romantic drawbridge, moat, and row of cannon on the ramparts. Unfortunately restoration was underway so portions of the Castle were closed, but it is a lovely location and the rooms which were open are gorgeously restored to their 1660's Swedish renaissance appearance. Kalmar is worth a detour just to get a taste for Sweden when it made a (brief) appearance as a major European power. More

Visually the castle is exactly the image of a European castle you would imagine. It has great views and some excellent photo opportunities. The inner exhibit was interesting but perhaps not as great as the castle's exterior (but when are they ever).
