Description: Experience prison conditions of the past in two unique prison buildings...
Experience prison conditions of the past in two unique prison buildings. Follow history from the old castle jail with its underground dungeons, dating back to the mid-1600s, to one of Sweden’s first penitentiaries, dating from 1847. You will witness the Swedish prison system, which developed from a period of public enforced shame and corporal punishment to a time when prisoners were isolated from society in what we now call solitary confinement. A visit to the Prison Museum leaves no one unaffected. When you visit the museum, borrow an audioguide in english or german for free!

The museum consists of two buildings, one displaying older and the other one more recent prison history. To my understanding, both buildings are authentic prisons; you can see how the prisons actually looked like, and how the prisoners lived in them. The exhibitions are rather small, however; if you don't want to listen to an audio guide, it takes barely... More

Well presented museum. Nothing overwhelming, but interesting enough to visit if you like your history.

Interesting one. Let you know how peopl used to live and get punished many years ago. I can say it was the most interesting place to visit in Gavle

A great job have been done creating the dolls within the museum and the way the presentation is done using headphones and a portable unit. Definitely a must see when visiting Gävle.

The best is to buy ticket for ghoust tour when you do, for the price you also can come back to see the museum the next two days. The tour is between 6 and 8 and it is great. Actors are really scary. Perfect make up and acting. You get scared when not expected. Very, very well done. Worth the... More

At first glance I thought that I'm going to see a great and impressive history about this place but it turned out that half of the museum was transformed into gov offices. And only a small portion was remaining for the museum to exhibit. However the small tour didn't take more than 15 mins to see the whole museum. The... More

Take the time to see this place. We enjoyed the museum very much and it is easy to get around. Lots of interesting history and fun to compare to what we have in the US.

A whirlwind history of prison life from the 18th century on, all inside a former prison. In the first section, you get a sense of the claustrophobic conditions of those times. The English language audio-guide, included with admission, is informative. However, much of the exhibit signage is in Swedish. Understandable, seeing as how we're in Sweden, but you miss out... Visited the Museum with my son, we had a good few hours wandering the modern and old jails. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We had a very informative tour. Well worth the look, interesting and entertaining.
