We visited on a bright, sunny, but cold winter's day. A great morning out, easily reached from the centre of town by the bus which runs every hour from Smedjegatan. Both th church and the visitor centre were open, and the film show at the latter gave an interesting and very adequate introduction to the history behind the town. And... More

I was fortunate enough to attend a lovely wedding at this stunning church in the centre of Gammalstad which is a very picturesque village and particularly so at this time of the year when everywhere is covered in snow. A fairyland setting. Try the the local Artic Berry jam (åkebär).

Fascinating village, lovely to walk round, and we had an excellent multi-lingual guide. The residents allow you to look round their little houses. Museum explaining the history is very good. Best visited in the long summer days.

When we went to Gammelstad, there were only 5 tourist including 2 of us. Even the tourist office was closed :). The place looks beautiful in winter, red houses, snow covered roads and trees appear a different world. The church stands pretty much tall in the village and is lovely from inside.

The surroundings of the church village were charming and Gammelstad is well worth a visit! Easy to find thanks to good signs.

A really lovely place to visit. Even if you have seen other "old towns" around Sweden, this one is the biggest and best preserved and Gammelstad Church Town is on the World Heritage List of cultural and natural settings of outstanding value to humanity. It is so beautiful during the summer, you can walk around for more than hour and... More

We had a great time wandering through this old church town! It is quaint and old and definitely gave a feeling of being in a time warp. There are also shops to visit where you can buy items and a cafe where you can stop and rest while savouring the goodies. We happened to be in the church when a christening... More

The village was used when going to church from places far away. Reamarkable and special. Meeting once a week in the summer with great vintage automobiles.

A beautiful and very quiet place in the wintertime (which means more than half of the year in Northern Sweden). During the week-end, when most visitors should be expected, everything is closed - the socalled visitor center, the museum house, the open-air museum, the shops, the restaurant... But definitely worth a visit. However, It might be difficult to walk around... More

The church village of Gammelstad or Kyrkbyn is very pretty with its coating of winter snow. On a Sunday whenit is snowing heavily it is also very deserted with nothing at all open - no cares or restaurants or even the visitor centre. It is nicer to visit on a sunny day in winter if you have a chance as... More
