Kronborg is a star fortress situated near the town of Helsingør (immortalized as Elsinore in Shakespeare's Hamlet) on the extreme northeastern tip of Zealand at the narrowest point of the Øresund, the sound between Denmark and Sweden. In this part, the sound is only 4 km wide, hence the strategic importance of maintaining a sea fortress at this location commanding... More

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I got off at the Elsinore station and walked to the Kronborg Slot. What greets you is something majestic standing as a symbol of Denmark's royalty. The Royal Apartments are very well maintained, especially the intricate tapestries that adorn the wall. There is a free guided tour in English starting at specific... More

Kronborg is definitely worth the trip up from Copenhagen-- it can easily be accessed by public transit and a 15-20 min walk up to the castle. Really soak in the views from the outside and walk the perimeter. The inside of the castle is a bit barren compared with say Frederiksborg, but still enjoyable. Take the tour (free) and hear... More

the supposed 'inspiartion' for Hamlet's castle. Sprawling with amazing collection and grounds. The crowds are a bit much but comes with the territory. More

We caught the train from Copenhagen Central to Helsinger and had a magical trip through the countryside with the snow falling. The journey was about 45 minutes and then there was a 15 minute walk to the castle. The walk was flat and the snow was only falling lightly. There were different options and we dcided on the number 2... More

Chose the right day for atmosphere to see this! It was freezing rain and intense winds all around. Still had a wonderful time, even in the "casements" which go on forever! Recommend bringing a good flashlight for this, and be warned that the castle closes at 3 in winter. We didn't get to do more than glance in the chapel,... More

This castle offers exciting history as well as excellent location. Take a walk around the castle and watch Sweden across the sound just 5 km away. A tour inside is worth the time and will give you a glimpse of the way the royals where living on the 17th century. If you have the time take a detour to Helsingør.... More

Visiting the Kronborg Castle is a very nice and valuable half-day trip from central Copenhagen (45 minutes by train from Central Station). I went there on a day with a daunting, forbidding weather, which in a way was annoying, but on the other hand added to the experience: you can't imagine a gloomier place than Elsinore Castle on a stormy,...
