Oh don't you just love it when you go into a quiet shop and the staff feel compelled to follow you are you're browsing as if you're planning some sort of jewel heist. Well this is exactly the experience you can expect here and it's not subtle. On the day we were there I think the staff outnumbered visitors 10:1.... More

The Byzantine museum has some great early Christian period collections. I was really impressed with the condition of the artifacts, the frescos and marble creations. It is worth the trip and next to the Archeological museum. So you get great history within walking distance. The flow of the museum was perfect. It took you through religion, the culture and society.... More

The monuments of the Byzantine era are always fascinating. The tour guide taught us many things about the daily life in Byzantium.

What a pleasure to enter this museum! Entering from the summer heat of Thessaloniki to this air conditioned space is a wonderful experience. Every room is spacious, excellently laid out, with interesting and educational labels telling about the history and the significance of the exhibits. Particularly wonderful is the collection of icons from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Highly... More

I love Byzantine art and I loved this museum. It does a great job of telling a story and not just being a collection of objects. Displays begin in Classical antiquity (spectacular mosaics) and lead the visitor through over a millennium of art and culture. Very easy to follow with lots of clear and informative English text. Recommend buying the... More

Very good museum and extremely cheap (too cheap?). The building itself is also interesting. We were surprised by the lack of other visitors...

This is a marvellous place. It is well laid out and we saw things we had never seen before. The graves were reminiscent of Egyptian tombs but complete units. The paintings in them are beautiful. The rooms are large and spacious and move from period to period of the Byzantine period. A must see in this city.
