This june (2013) I visited Zagoria, this area is famous for its typical stone houses on hillsides, stone arched bridges and wild nature. There are 45 original, stone villages, the most famous is Monodendri from where stone path leads to the Church of Agia Paraskevi and to the gorge Vikos - about 600 metres far. In the church, there lives... More

We parked in Vikos and descended into the gorge with three kids, one 7 yrs old. lovely hike down. then around the bottom, including visiting the small church. Then back up, and lunch at the little local place, FANTASTIC!!! The old couple run the restaurant. It's on the south side of the parking lot.

We stayed and started our hike in Monodendri. We hiked through the gorge with a guide from Compass Adventures (http://www.compassadventures.gr/). He speaks Greek, English and German and the service included a trekking pole, some snacks, his knowledge about the gorge and transportation back to Monodendri. We saw some other hikers in the gorge so I guess a guide is not... More

The climb into and out of the gorge was amazing! A couple of points which were not mentioned, the length of the walk from Monodendri to Vikos, one way is approximately 17.5 kms. And yes it does take 6.5 hours to do the hike. Hiking boots are a must, and there is a tree bridge which has to be crossed,... More

I hadn't even heard of Vikos Gorge, but according to the Guinness Book of Records, it's the deepest gorge in the world. It's certainly deep! The best way to walk it is to stay in the pretty, quiet village of Monodendri for two nights, and then arrange for a taxi to take you to the far end of the gorge... More

We did the rafting in late March this year. It is highly recommended for everyone - not only for the adventurous! (honestly speaking, we are not of the daring types at all.) It is a class 1 rafting and yet you can feel the the powerful flows of the snow water river. The boats are well equipped and commanded by... More

Breath taking beauty one cannot afford to miss out. Mountain view that will excite not only the alpine lovers but also those who love waters. Springs and imposing mountains, stone bridges and of course the gorge itself, will make this experience unforgettable.

This is the second largest gorge in the world, and what a view! When in the Eastern Zagoria villages, it is very easy to drive to, and marked well. Signs are in English. Hope all will enjoy as my husband and I did. The walk to the Gorge is on a flat service, so easy for wheel chairs.
