Right now, the volcano is really underwater, and lava coming out from time to time, have create and adds different layers of material to Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni. (last small explotion happened on 1950) If you are not a specialist and have no knowledge on these kind of things, a knowledgable guide may makes a difference when you visit... more

Take the hot springs tour! It's not really expensive, and they take you up the volcano, and then into the hot spring. You get to see some smoke coming out of the caldera (just a little bit) ... but mostly checking out all of the rock formations and colors is spectacular. The most fun of course would be the hot... more

Me and my husband booked a private tour around the Caldera though our hotel on a great sailing boat called "Thalassa" ! When waiting at the port, we were not sure which boat was the one we would be sailing and then, we realised that it was just in front of us...so imposing!!!! We sailed in the morning, reached the... more

There are several different boats that offer various trips out of Santorini harbor. This review only addresses one of them. I took a trip on the boat Thallassa, which leaves from the port at 3:30 pm and returns to the same place about 9:00 pm. It's a masted sailing vessel, but did most of it's traveling under engine power. Other... more

There is no getting away from the fact that all it is, is a big black rock. And as volcanos go there are better. You get to see a bit of steam and put your hand in a hot hole - but not much else. I think your experience may depend on the guide you get. We had a very... more

I took a boat tour to the volcano right off Santorini's coast and did NOT find the trip worthwhile. The volcano has no main crater or any spot where you can see geological activity - the best you'll get is some steam seeping through crack in the earth. The hike to the top does yield a decent view. By far,... more

The Santorini volcano is worth the trip. We took a traditional caique ship on an afternoon tour. The islet has a great lava rock coastline and a clear path to the rim. There's a lot of dust and rocks, and it's a healthy grade so I'd highly suggest wearing sneakers or teva-type shoes. Also, bring water! more

While staying on Santorini I took a day tour that included the Akrotiri ruins, the volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, and the island of Thirassia. Book your tour directly at a travel agency, not from your hotel. Two others from my hotel booked through the hotel, I did so at a travel agent. Each paid almost twice... more

Definately take an all day boat trip that includes the volcano (you will be charged a euro to hike to the top). The hike is uphill on black rock and is hot -really hot in the summer! Take water, wear tennis shoes, not flip flops, and plan on your shoes getting dirty-not a walk for white tennies. There are little... more
