We travelled to Thira from Kamari which only took 15 minutes on the local bus. It was well worth the visit. Thira sits on top of the cliffs where the cruise ships moor and you can go down to the bottom by cablecar, returning back up via donkey if your brave enough. Right now, the volcano is really underwater, and lava coming out from time to time, have create and adds different layers of material to Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni. (last small explotion happened on 1950) If you are not a specialist and have no knowledge on these kind of things, a knowledgable guide may makes a difference when you visit... more

Take the hot springs tour! It's not really expensive, and they take you up the volcano, and then into the hot spring. You get to see some smoke coming out of the caldera (just a little bit) ... but mostly checking out all of the rock formations and colors is spectacular.
