This is the most obvious hike you can make on the island of Santorini and it will lead you - if you have not discovered them by now - through the sister villages of Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli, going higher up all the time above the caldera. It then continues through the expanding housing in northern direction and it finally goes to Oia via a really magnificent path. This hike offers many changing views on the volcano, the sea and the caldera. This hike takes two hours and a half (actual walking time), but the total time can reach 4 or 5 hours. It is ideal to leave Firà at about 10am and in this way you will arrive in Oia already between 1 and 2pm. You can then eat in Oia in one of the many bars. In the afternoon you can descend to the little harbour of Ammoudi in Oia. From the bus square in Fira (when you get to Fira by bus) you have to continue to the very busy square of Theotokopoulou. This is the modern centre of Fira with a lot of travel agencies, banks and bars. In the corner, in between the George's Snack Corner and the Pelican travel agency you go left, in the direction of the caldera. You can then take one of the three streets off the right, they all lead towards the higher part of Fira. Once at the Archaeological Museum higher up (this museum is open till 3pm, but not on Mondays), take a left, past the upper station of the cable car. You then go right above the caldera, until the red-brown building higher up that dominates this neighbourhood of Firostefani: it is the P.M. Nomikos Conference Centre, where a lot of exhibitions take place – on the extending corner in front of this building many people take pictures of the marvellous panoramic view. On the left of the Centre you follow the tiled road and stairs, while you enjoy the view – in front of you you can see the even higher situated village of Imerovigli.

Great hike. Bring lots of water. The hike is semi-difficult with some fairly steep uphill climbs and downhill on some uneven surfaces. We passed one couple with a baby stroller. I do not recommend that. The path is not built for strollers. If you plan to take the bus back to Fira, consider whether or not there are cruise ships... More

Easy 2 hour hike with marvellous views. Good shoes a must because of cobblestones in some places. No shade so make sure to take water, although there is one roadside drink stand along the way.

It was a great hike! But I would say the weather is extremely important. On the day I hiked, the weather was pleasant - nice breezes and minimal heat from the sun, so it made the hike enjoyable. Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable, cooling clothes.

Best way to see the northern side of the island that overlooks the Caldera. Just make sure you bring lots of water and the appropriate shoes, as this hike has a lot of both up and down hills. Well worth taking the few hours to do!

This was a great hike. I would strongly suggest doing it in sneakers and bringing water. We hiked with friends we were traveling with and all of us are in great shape but found the hike to be fun and long. We were very excited to eat lunch when we arrived in Oia about 3 hours later. We did take... More

We went early in the morning at 8am on a Friday on a cloudy day. We started in Fira and had a coffee and pastry at to town square to get started. Good sneakers or shoes are recommended for comfort and traction on the gravel parts. The overall walk from Fira to Oia is 12km and I would allow 3+... More

This is the classic hike from Fira to Oia which took us 4 hours, as there is much to see along the coastline, photograph and chat to others who are also on the trail. We started at 9:00 am on a misty, windy and overcast day -- weather improved pretty quickly. After passing all the beautiful romantic villas, the trail... More

Do this from Fira to Oia in the early morning. You can take the bus one way there or back for 1.60 euro. The trail starts at the top of the cable car and is well marked. Not good for running as too rough, but great for walking.

It was everything I ever imagined and more. The blue roofed churches, the cliffs, the blue sea surrounding everything, it's the perfect place to get lost. It's all uphill and downhill, so I recommend comfy shoes, but the view is worth it. People there are quite friendly and food is tasty, but I guess I'm a bit biased since after... More
