We walked down the 587 steps and back up the 587 My 69 year old mother did it and enjoyed it. Go it on a cool day. I can only imagine hod hot it would be in summer. It's quite an accomplishment. Not much to do or see in the bottom during the winter season but it was fun none... More

Me and my husband went on the trams twice and although I am terrified of heights I found it to be quite enjoyable and felt safe which I wasn't expecting, we came back up on the mules they are only called donkeys because a lot of nationalities don't know what a mule is I was informed of this by a... We were the only cruise ship in the harbour to start with so were able to use the tram as the donkeys was a no go for us because what we had heard & finally saw. Another cruise ship came in but only a small one & left before we had to be back on board so no wait more... More

We were on the first tender to Santorini. This was a good option to get into Santorini. We had no line and was quickly to the top. When we arrived at the top we were able to watch the donkeys heading to work. It was interesting to watch them head down the steps. We got great pictures. The line for... More

We came on a cruise ship and was given 3 options to get into Santorini, walk, donkey or cable car. The cable car was 30 minutes queuing as they can't cope with cruise ship traffic. We were warned to avoid donkey as you will smell of donkey for days and they tend to scrape against the rocks to find shade... More

This is one of the options to go to the old port from where the boats/ships to the volcano leave. It is not that expensive -as far as I remember 5 Eur per one direction and for a few minutes you are several hundred metres down. The view is really worth the price. We used the tram to go to... More

Even though the donkeys looked in good shape, as an animal lover I just couldn't ask one of them to haul me up or down the cliff. And walking is perilous at best. Spend the euros and take the cable car.

There are two options to get to the top of the hill in Santorini. One is by mule the other is by cable car or tram. I recommend the cable car as it is an amazing view and you avoid mule dung along the way. It is also quicker and costs 5 Euros each way.

If you want to get down to sea level from Fira, you have 2 options: the tram or the "donkey dung path." We had planned to walk down and back (just for the exercise and to extend our viewing pleasure) but had such a horrible experience walking down (on a slippery, crowded, dung & urine covered donkey path) that we...
