to get down and up to the old port, there are 3 ways. Walk on foot, Donkey, and cable car. I walk down after watching the sunset from Fira town hill. then I spent some time to walk around. Since it was dark after the sunset, I was not comfortable to walk back up to the town. I was also... More

We recently visited Santorini for the second time and although we love the Island we will not cruise to there again. The reason for this is the shocking organisation of the cable car, We queued in the hot sun for over an hour with no knowledge of how long the queue was and there was definite queue jumping going on... Yes a donkey seems like it's a wonderful nostalgic experience but after seeing the poor condition of the donkeys, take the tram. It's 650 steps with adults on their back, being held on by improper equipment that causes open sores at the girth area and on the back of the legs where they're obviously rubbing. It seems to be standard... More

We stopped at Santorini on a cruise and wasted 2-hours trying to get to the city. I would strongly suggest excursions so minimal time is wasted

When we came back from a tour, we were lucky to be able to take the tram without any line or waiting time, otherwise if you try to used it in the early morning when the cruises are arriving, you will have to wait in lime for more than 2 hours. The other 2 options that you have, is to... More

The cable car is a nice way to save time and not become tired. But it's too expensive! The cables don't let you take a nice picture, and it's too fast (I guess less than 2 minutes). Be sure that the stores and restaurants down there are open! When I went there all stores were closed! And for animals sake,... More

Santorini is the prime candidate for the lost continent of Atlantis. Somewhere in the beginning of the 15th Century, a volcano erupted and formed the current islands, including Santorini, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful Greek islands. The ship drops anchor off Skala, about 900 feet below the town of Fira, the island’s capital. One can... More

The tram on Santorini was packed due to multiple ships being in port, but it definitely beats walking up the long switchback road to the top. Walking down was not bad and I would recommend walking down as opposed to waiting in the line with everybody headed to the ships.

But make sure you give yourself enough time to get through the line that can snake through town a bit. We started by the big planter and took about 30 mins to get back down.
