Kalydon (often called Spinalonga) is a small island in the Gulf of Elounda. It is about half a km long and easy to walk all the way round. The island was made into a fortress but in the 1930s to 1950s it was a leper colony. It was awesome to walk around - and very beautiful to view from Elounda.... More

Used until the 50-60s Spinalonga allows you to.have an insight in to a sad part of the local.history A short boat ride (book from the port) will get you to the island then a few Euro entry fee. Walk at your pace and explore. The old fortifications then the.old accommodation area You can also still visit the cemetery there A... More

Boat trip €10 from a Elounda. States a comeback in one hour but informed by tour guide that they come back every half an hour and you can jump on to anyone. Don't be deceived either do the hour run around tour or you will be waiting an hour for the next boat

Go early before the large trip boats arrive so you have peace and quiet to explore. You are given a leaflet when you pay the 2 euro entrance fee but I had bought a useful book at the stationery shop just along from the pharmacy in Elounda - 'Follow us in Spinalonga' by Alibertis Antonis..

We visited on an arranged trip, and to be frank we plan to go back again and do the trip on a day when there are less organised excursions. When people talk about remains of buildings thats a little dramatic, many are pretty complete some even have the curtains as left when the Island was evacuated. The fee to get... More

We visited the island through an arranged excursion with Thomson. You arrive by boat and enter through what was the main street. You can see the remains of a lot of the buildings, the hospital and the church. Its very interesting to hear the whole history of the island. We were staying in Rethymnon so after all the bus pick... Would really recommend reading about the history of this island before you visit, unless of course you are on a guided tour. We did our own thing and caught a bus from Elounda to Plaka and then a boat across to Spinalonga. This enabled us to visit early in the morning to avoid the hoards of organised trips. As we... More

We paid the boat company in Elounda to take us across to Spinalonga for 10 Euros each return. The entrance fee is then 2 Euros each when you arrive, although well worth the very small fee to get in. You can spend quite a few hours just exploring the place, which also has a lot of history if you care... More
