This place is a must visit when visiting Crete. It has a great and very interesting history. Trip to Spinalonga (by boat) had reasonable pricing and ticket to Spinalonga was reasonable too. Some buildings has been restored, but most of the island is in quite bad shape. People can wonder around the island quite freely. We enjoyed our trip to... More

Fantastic, so much to see, but read up about it and go independently to spend as much time as you want. Get boat locally from Elounda or Plaka

If you have read Victoria Hislops, The Island, you will know that Spinalonga is best known as a Leper Colony. Only accessible by Boat from Plaka or Elounda for about 8-10 Euros. Best to wear stout shoes or walking boots. If you want info, it is best to book a guided tour as there is no info on the Island.

We had heard that you could get a boat ride to the island, have a wonder around and then get another boat ride back. However, this seemed like a very long, hot day so instead we decided to hire out our own little boat and take our own trip around the island. Of course this meant we could not go... More

Staying at Elounda, but walked to Plaka (on a hot sunny morning) and got the 5 minute local ferry for 8 euros (no mention of imminent storms!), rather than the longer trip from Elounda on a bigger boat. Arriving on the island, we briefly explored the path up to the former cemetery and then cut back to the village to... More

My wife loved it, but too rocky for me so waited at the small pier whilst she explored. Before you go, read the book "The Island' by Victoria Hislop to prepare you for the history. Boat ride from Elounda was reasonable and refreshing.
