The best views of Spinalonga and best departure point is Plaka village from where it is a very short (and inexpensive) trip. The old Venetian fortress is now in ruins except for the buildings now used as a museum. There is a lot of history concentrated here, perhaps the most interesting being the period when the island was used as... More

Having read The Island, I really had to see the reality. WOW! A spectacular island, really stunningly beautiful. We took a boat trip from Agios Nikolaos, it was very long and in choppy waters not a great experience for someone with absolutely no sea legs! On disembarking a modest fee of €2 is charged to enter the island. I don't... More

We visited on a perfect day, arriving early to the dockside in Elunda, dispatched by a medium sized boat on a calm clear sea, we slowly made our way as our guide relayed information over the loudspeaker. On arriving we were discharged onto a dock and led through the entrance tunnel into the main body of the fortress, finding shade... More

We visited this island whilst on holiday and found it to be most interesting. So much so that we both read the book 'The Island'. The only downside was the trip over when it stopped half way for swimming. This was supposed to be for fortyfive minutes but was nearer an hour so our trip was shorter than expected,. We... More

If you have read the book this is a place you really should visit. If you haven't read the book go anyway! There are downsides to this trip and none are the fault of the island. We opted for a BBQ boat trip which was recommended by our holiday rep - not the best idea as we only had an... More

Very emotional place to visit. Go on one of the boats from elounda or Plaka. Don't go by tour company otherwise you will only have an hour. You need at least 2 or 3 hours for the visit.

Took the boat from Ágios Nikólaos. While this was cheap enough I would recommend taking a boat from Plaka or Elounda. We were not given enough time and the guide was poor. The island itself is interesting with so much history. I would recommend reading a book about the history of the lepers on the island before visiting.

Very interesting Island with lots of history. Most recently a leper colony. Try to read Victoria Hislop's The Island before you visit, the fiction gives a clear flavour of the agonies of separation suffered by those sent to this isolation 'prison'. There are many other books describing life on Spinalonga a Island. Go early on a local boat before the... More

Plan your trip, it may be worth the drive to Plaka north of Elounda the ferry takes just 5 minutes, from Elounda it takes about 20 minutes and Agios Nicholias somewhat longer. Tickets are readily available, you are not tied to returning on the same ferry we jumped on another boat to get back to Elounda. Tip is to get... More
