The archaeological museum at Agios Nikolaos is currently closed for refurbishment works. Understand not likely to reopen before end of 2014?

nothing to dislike but research before you go is a must. Be warned in summer heat you are in the open most of the time so take water , sun block and protection hats etc.

This was worth going to look around as a contrast to the other less cultural activities on offer in Ag Nik. If you cannot get to Knossos or the LAto remains near Kritsa then this museum is the best way of starting to understand the truly ancient nature of Cretan and Minoan history and culture.

But absolutely worth a visit together with a visit to Knossos. Both places are very popular, so it is better to go early in the morning. The cost of the visit is surprisingly low.

We wanted to go to both Agios Nikolias and Heraklion museums, the first one was being rebuilt and the second one was being refurbished with just two rooms open. A total waste of time.

I love the whole setting of the museum, starting with the oldest finds and slowly getting "newer".Its labeled in english and each piece is explained what it was used for.Its not expensive and has a good selection of postcards. The bad news is that it has closed for modenisation and I'm not sure when it will re-open.

The main museum was closed for refurbishment and we only saw a very small collection at a temporary museum

The Archeological Museum at Ayios Nikolaos is currently closed due to major rebuilding work. We made the walk uphill from the town-centre to find a large building site across the road from the town's hospital only to discover that the museum is currently closed. There was no information to indicate when it will reopen.

Even if this museum is small has very important pieces of Konossos' history. It is a must after visiting the Palace.

Fascinating site with excellent guide. Try to avoid the middle of the day (at least in August!) as it gets very hot.
