We have been visiting Crete for the last 12 years, but our holidays are not complete without a visit to Loutro. To get the best you have to stay at least two nights. That includes real Cretan food for lunch at The Blue House, dinner at Notos followed the next day with breakfast at The Blue House, skip lunch and... more

Loutro has to be my favourite place in Greece. It is peaceful, beautiful and the food is great. If you are there, definitely try the kayaking trip to Sweetwater Beach - it's an incredible experience. The Blue House Hotel is tops for food and service. A lovely getaway for a few days of sheer heaven. more

We spent 3 days of utter peace in Loutro in 2006. We'd passed on the ferry 10 years earlier on our way from the Samaria Gorge walk and always wanted to return. I'm so glad we did. We were staying in Sfakia for the 3 days prior to our visit and had walked from there to Sweetwater (vertiginous walk to... more

i go to loutro every summer for a few months and have gotten to know the locals quite well. i'll begin by disagreeing with some of the reviewers. for your information, loutro is a real village. while you're off vacationing there is a whole other side of loutro you tend to miss. there is all the drama, gossip, local interaction... more

I first went to Loutro in 1993, when I stumbled across it and got trapped for a few nights. Always meant to return, but only managed it in late 2005, when I really got into some serious walking and soothed nerves frayed by London living. And now I'm contemplating my 5th trip back! It's turned into my hideaway and recovery... more

Loutro is nice, but it is far from being an unforgetable place. Anyway: Minus: - It is not a village with real life besides tourism. It is a line of restaurant, hotel and rooms to let along the shore of the bay. - We were there in August and it was just crowed. Too much. Loads of people coming in... more

My partner and I stayed in Loutro for a few days in June. Its a place I've always MEANT to visit, especially after reading many rave reviews. We are both huge fans of Greece - particularly Crete - and had great hopes for Loutro. Its certainly pretty, the people you meet there are all very nice, the food is above... more

We have just returned from a wonderful week in Loutro (May 2007). We stayed at Xenofina's apartments: they were nice if basic, with a lovely view over the harbour and looked after by a kindly old lady who was perhaps the only lady in the village who couldn't speak English. 'Endaksi, endaksi' was usually enough. You can't escape the feeling... more

My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting Loutro during our 4 week visit to Crete. We had hiked from Sfakia to Sweetwater Beach to Loutro and were so enchanted with Loutro that we decided to spend the remainder of the day and night there. Such wonderfully friendly people! So quiet! Terrific food! Great day hikes around the village!... more

I heard about Loutro while researching my trip to Crete online. We wanted to walk Samaria Gorge, and I convinced my partner that stopping off in Loutro would be a good idea. It was the best thing we did, and it was a great trip overall. We hiked the gorge with just a couple of small rucksacks. Inside mine was... more
