From the time we started we found this tour the most interesting and learning experience. Apart from the tasters which showed you the real greek foods , the learning the historical side, and exploring the back streets was superb. We loved it and cannot believe how quick the time went which is always a good sign. Our host was absolutely... More

I would recommend this tour to anyone. My wife and I have taken food tours around Europe and this is one the more interesting tours. Not only did we learn about the food but also some history about Greece and the surrounding countries. The tour guide has been doing this a while and is truly passionate about it, and proud... More

This was an enjoyable and informative tour. Unfortunately, I can't recall the guide's name, but he did an excellent job and was extremely knowledgeable about Greek food and culture. It rained throughout the morning of my tour, but I was having so much fun that hardly noticed the weather.

Definitely the BEST food tour I ever took (an I took a few for my vegan travel blog). Despina was our guide, what a lovely experience I had with her, a woman with so much knowledge about food & culture. I didn't learn only about the typical foods of Greece, but also about the culture and mentality of our Greek... More

I highly recommend this activity as a great way of touring Athens and learning about Greek history and culture. Evangelos was an excellent guide and extremely knowledgeable. It was a delightful experience, I thoroughly enjoyed sampling traditional Greek food, both sweet and savoury, although I probably could have done with more food!

My husband, son (17) and I had a three and a half hour walking tour of the food shops cafes, restaurants and markets of Athens, with the lively and very well informed Despina. It was February and so rather cold but she held our attention with ease as she threaded her way through the busy streets around the Flea Market.... More

We took the Food Walking Tour with Despina. This was the second time taking the tour - this time, with my husband who thoroughly enjoyed the insightful and personalised tour (small groups make it really personal). Despina's knowledge and understanding of Greek food, its Greek and 'other' origins and her excellent choice of places to sample food and products gave... More

My daughter and I enjoyed this evening so much last year, I brought my husband on our return to Athens this year. He said that this evening was the highlight of our visit in Athens - closely followed by our Walking Food Tour and Acropolis Tour/Museum tour. Ilia is a fantastic cook and a marvellous teacher who walked us through... More

We spent a wonderful evening learning to make traditional Greek appetizers, salads, and a main course of lamb/potatoes. We enjoyed cooking, drinking wine, and having dinner with families from other countries. Warning: The class lasts 6 hours. We began at 5:30pm and didn't leave the restaurant until 11:30pm. The tour description stated 3 hours - but it was closer to... More

My partner and I went on the Athens Food tour in October with Despina as our guide. Despina was extremely informative and very passionate about both Athens and its history, especially from the perspective of its culture and food. Our group was small which was a bonus and covered a few different nationalities. We would definitely recommend this tour in... More

Staying in Omonia

Neighborhood Profile
Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its underground stalls, the square is now mostly frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a sense of old commercial Athens, especially at the picturesque meat, fish and vegetable markets some way beyond the City Hall. The blocks to the west of Athinas are home to many Chinese and South Asian traders, adding a multicultural atmosphere to what was until the late 1990s a very homogenous society.
