It was simply magnificent! Thanks to the suggestions of many reviews: go with a hat, sunglasses and good shoes.
The caryatids were lovely. We would have liked to walk into the Parthenon, but alas it is not possible.
We managed to climb the steps up to Athena's Temple and the Parthenon. From the top, you can see all of Athens. This was the most beautiful site of our trip. Athens has 5million plus people and the city is amazing.
I first saw the Parthenon in 1960 when you could actually go inside as well as touching it, and of course times have changed - but it is still a sacred place which has survived over many centuries, even when it is overrun with visitors and workmen.
The history of the Parthenon is incredible. To be able to see it in person is one of the highlights of my life I will never forget. Go and sit, just look and imagine what it took for this to be built and what it has been through since then. Hire one of the local guides and listen to their...

Enjoy the view of the Acropolis and Parthenon from the many alfresco cafes, from Mars Hill, a different view from Filopappos Hill, or sitting at the rooftop bar of the Attolos Hotel in Athinas Street. Wait for the sunset .... and then wait a bit longer for the lights to come on ---- you'll be glad you did!
We had seen the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum and it was neat to see where they had come from. I believe they need to be returned to Greece! It is being repaired and there was a lot of scaffolding up. Still a most beautiful building.
To visit this iconic site is well worth it. The temple and surrounding building are amazing. No visit to Athens is complete without seeing this.
But it is in pretty poor shape and being reconstructed. The views from the top of the Acropolis make the trip worthwhile but the Parthenon itself needs your imagination to see it in what it once was. The Temple of Hephaestus is of similar design, easy to get to, and worth seeing.
