You are now strolling down a lively local shoping street .Turn left... More

We always search out local markets when we travel, a chance to see local people and understand what they eat and their economy. This market was a delight. The outside is a little shabby, bit the market itself was bright and vibrant with 2 floors of vendors. They sold meat, vegetables, flowers. The colors are great of you are into... More

Wandering down Rua Formosa (down the hill from Rua Santa Catarina) I looked through a gigantic archway and caught a glimpse of bright fruit and flower stalls. Who knew that Mercado Balhao meant market? Hours: M-F 9am-5pm, Sat 7-1pm (Summer), Sunday CLOSED. It is here in this two storey building you rub shoulders with local citizens buying their fresh food... More

Back to basic, markets that caters to all things fresh! and some sundry goods as well as postcards & souvenirs! I witness fishwives filleting fishes for her patron, chicken and rabbit sold with head and tail! Its really nice to see poultry and game being treated with respect! It has 2 floors, fruits and flowers were available. Quite an adventure!... More

I loved this market, no pretensions just fabulous pastries, fish, fruit, coffee (60 cents) and local atmosphere, I'd avoid the touristy dyed shells though! I also liked the knife sharpener at one of the entrances. Strangely there was only one kiosk selling cheese and a couple selling dried meats, I had assumed there would be plenty of cheese but maybe... More

I love markets but this one disappointed me. It was small and not fresh. I didn't want to buy a thing... but actually I bought an apron, which was much cheaper here than in other shops.

It's clear this market has seen better days but it's still worth a visit to see the variety of stalls. Stalls selling fish, cheese, fruit, vegetables, breads and souvenirs are scattered across this market place. It's pleasant enough to walk around but we didn't spend long here. We went on a weekday morning and it was quite quiet so it... More

An interesting place to visit especially on a Saturday morning. But it has seen much better days and would need a refurbishment. Don't get me wrong, I have been to lots of places over the world, but this is by far the least appealing market.

To be honest, the market was lack of charm...but you can buy all kinds of souvenirs here. You can find more interesting things by the river or several saturday markets in the Porto center.
