What a lovely little place Guimaraes is. The perfect place to while away a few hours on a sunny day. The original capital of Portugal, the city was a European capital of culture for 2012, which has resulted in number of new cultural ventures around the edge of the Unesco World Heritage old town. On arriving at the railway station... More

The historical centre of Guimarães is mandatory to visit. This was were Portugal was born and when we visit this part of the city we can breath the history! So delicious to walk around all the small streets, appreciate the people, the habits... So many restaurants, shops with tradicional portuguese pieces.. I do recommend stopping for lunch and enjoy the... More

It was clean, well maintained, historic and friendly.Free parking at the back of the castle so we didn' worry about parking meters and walked everywhere. It looked further on our map but wasn' far to get to all places of interest in the historic quarter.

I thought I would have a fantastic visit to Guimaraes but needed some guidance. I stopped into the Tourist information office first for help in what to see. Not only did they ignore me but they had nothing in English except for one (quantity 1) map for Young Travelers. We did have a few teenagers in the group so I... More

I visited the historical centre of Guimaraes and I'm impressed with the maintenance done though the years, the buildings are nicely renovated, attractions are in place and the traffic is deviated from the streets where we can walk away from the traffic. Just a note to the Municipality, I suggest that the problem of the "car guards" should be stopped... More

I loved Guimaraes, but it is too far from the wineries and Porto. We stayed for 3nights, but I think a better option would have been to stay two nights in the Duorro Valley, which was amazing.

Really lovely area in a very nice town. Well and truly worth wandering around as is most of this charming old town. A bouquet for the locals here too. They're nice people.

Guimaraes was one of our favorite places from our trip to Portugal. The centro historico is quaint and charming and I couldn't resist taking a million pictures. We spent an afternoon just wandering around the streets of Guimaraes and found so many cute cafes and shops and even met some locals. An elderly man from Guimaraes introduced himself to us... More
