A very charming city with lots of historic buildings, parks, bars, places to walk, sit or relax. Here you can feel the history that had happened centuries ago. But the tour is not complete if you do not finish it with a dinner or at least a coffee in the restaurant or bar.

A walking tour followed by a coffee or wine, depending on the hour, is a charming way to reflect on this carefully preserved and restored area, the birthplace of the first king of Portugal, Alfonso I. There are plenty of shops to meet the requirements of tourists, and the entire area lends itself to walking the narrow streets and spending... More

Lovely city that boasts historic links to the creation of Portugal as a nation. The city is a postcard view, neatly trimmed and perfectly looked after. If you happen to spend the day in Guimaraes, bring your food and drinks along, as prices here tend to be over the top (twice the price paid in Porto from our experience). Can... More

We had a week in northern Portugal and took a day trip to this quaint historical town. We parked the car and wandered the narrow streets and alleys and explored the grounds of the Castle and Palace of the Dukes. It was like spending a day in history, in this well preserved and lovely town.

The historic centre is an easy walk from the train station. Be sure to check the large map outside the main door to get your bearings. The area has beautiful old buildings, picturesque squares with restaurants and the short walk uphill to the Paco dos Duques and the Castle. The tourist info centre is off the Praca S. Tiago, where... Guimaraes is an old medieval town just over an hour away from Porto by train. Fare is quite inexpensive. It is an easy walk into the historical center from the train station and one which will leave you rewarded with historical buildings, churches and cobblestone streets to wander around. Leave some time to stop for something at one of the... More

Take the time to stroll down the streets and squares of the historical center, sit in one of the many small cafes and taste the local sweets and chocolates. Not the most beautiful town I've seen in Portugal but certainly a very charming one.

Guimaraes is a lovely old town to walk around in with interesting and historic buildings in the narrow cobblestone streets. We wandered down to the old leather district, which was also interesting, and clearly in the process of being rejuvenated. The medieval statues and buildings as you walk up the hill are terrific. Everything seems very well maintained too.

History and conservation of the city. The birth place of Portugal. Very clean city and beautiful gardens and the governamental palace.

If you are reading my review, you must take into consideration that we have been traveling throughout Portugal and have seen some amazing sites. What is special about this city was its history. The sites are not breathe taking but the history is there.
