Guimaraes makes a great day trip from Braga, although we still couldn't escape the monsoon conditions enveloping Northern Portugal in January. You can park at the castle and walk down, or you can wend your way up from the bus station, The old centre oozes charm, with little squares to be discovered, gorgeous buildings and a couple of interesting museums.... I would have given it 5 stars but it seems to fall short of Portuguese standards in terms of aesthetics when compared to Porto or Lisbon. It's very nice to just walk around and wander through the lanes, but it does feel a little bit fake and most buildings aren't used to their full potential. The nicest part was in... More

Elegant old city especially nice as the rain kept tourists away. Worth an hour's stroll and a good lunch. One square leads to another, upwards to the castle.

Take couple of hours stroll through this well-preserved old town. Visiting the castle is not a must, as you might be queuing there. Plenty of pleasant cafes at squares and on the streets. Parkings available at the shopping district, priced reasonably.

Guimarães is where Portugal began so it's historical center and buildings are full of history and beauty! Castles, churches, archs, and so on. It's worth visiting for at least 3 days.

If you are seeking History you have to see the historical center in Guimaraes. A very ancient city where Portugal was born and that is complemented by a castle and a palace! Spend at least one full day to see the squares, churches and the rest!!

Nice place but have seen better ! Bit overrated ! The castle is in a decrepit state and looks like it's being repaired ready for paying turnstiles ! The palace is well worth the visit ! Taxi to station cheap and take the train from Porto , lovely ride

We would recommend anyone travelling to northern Portugal to pay a visit to this lovely town. It was the European Capital of Culture in 2012, and the old town looks very attractive. It's a very pleasant, safe place to wander around, and the food was consistently good. We found it to be a relaxing, friendly town.
