It is a historic city associated with the foundation of the nation and Portuguese identity, with more than a thousand years since its formation, when it was referred to as Vimaranes. Guimarães is one of the most important historical cities of the country, and its historic centre recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, making it definitely one of... More

This Unesco protected village really gives you the impression that you've landed to another era! Nice little restaurants and shops at the old streets!

Lots of narrow lanes and old buildings, lovely square, shops and plenty of cafes. We arrived early but it looks like it could get busy; good underground parking in the centre.

Perfectly preserved & lovely houses in the historic center of Guimaraes. Loved the 1000 years old castle too. Definitely something to see when you travel in the northern Portugal. Also had a wonderful lunch in one of the old squares, very good quality & low price (tapas restaurant).

We stayed in a Pousada just outside of town and walked in for a days sight seeing. Unfortunately the area surrounding the historic centre is a bit drab and uninteresting. Once you get to the old town it's narrow lanes, little shops and café's, hidden museums and impressive architecture. We started the day with a Yellow Bus tour, well worth... More

We enjoyed walking around the city center and had a great meal at a Tapas E Manias. Try to stay late enough to enjoy the lights - the area is beautiful without the lights, but the lights are lovely.

Here is where Portugal was born. The town is cosy and beautiful. You can wonder the alleys and feel the history around you. The castle was built a 1000 years ago which is very impressive. Just spend there an hour or two and then have a break in one of many bars and cafes around.
