Took a tour which proved just right. Compact historic centre surrounded by a large modern city. Two or three hours are more than enough. Portuguese handicrafts are notably cheaper than Porto. Most of the historic buildings were heavily restored in the 19th century resulting in a mix of styles.

We took the bus from Braga to Guimaraes (Euro 3.10 each). The Bus station is right next to the major shopping mall and it has a good food court on the top floor where we ate. It was quite difficult finding the tourist office as hardly anybody spoke sufficient English and my Portuguese aspires to schoolboy level. But once we... More

This was a great day trip from Porto, by train from Sao Bento train station. The historic town centre was beautiful, particlarly at sunset.

Guimaraes was a good day trip from Porto. You can catch a local train from San Bento station; it takes about 80 minutes of meandering through about 21 stations. Is only about 8 Euro return. The town centre is in easy walking distance of the train station and then enjoy wandering around the paved streets, churches, cafes and castle. Enjoy.

Very walkable, the historical center is truly amazing. The architecture is splendid, the monuments spectacular. Many squares, restaurants and cafes help in making the experience relaxing and enjoyable. A must see!

Visiting here was a bit like stepping back centuries to medieval life within the safety of castle walls. Guimaraes’s crenulated castle was built to defend against Moors and Normans in the 10th century. Portugal’s first king, Alfonso Henriques, was born here and enlarged the walls in the 12th. Inside the walls is a labyrinth of winding streets and lanes so... More

The old city in Guimaraes is beautiful - all narrow stone-clad medieval streets, little squares with cafes, majestic churches, a palace and a castle. What more could you want?

It has a lot of squares and lot of little streets to enjoy a very old medieval town. Everything is very close, and you will go from an attracting thing to the next one.
