Lots of steps up to this little church but well worth the climb. It was very ornate inside and had descriptive signs on the outer walls which gave the history of the place.

We went on the first day of the 10 day festival that takes place every year. They were still busy setting up. Decorations were going up and lots of hard work was going into making the area beautiful. During our trip to Madeira we visited this church on the same day as we went to Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, (see a separate review.) There are steep steps to get to this classical Portugese church, but it is worthwhile. It's a good idea to take a bus up to Monte, and then the cable car to the Botanical Gardens. You get magnificent views, see how the locals live, and, of course, see the church itself. Take public transportation to visit this site. A great view from the top. Please take the wicker sleigh for the trip down. It's an inexpensive fun ride. The statue and tomb of former emperor Carlos of Austria who died at Funchal in 1922, considered by us Belgians as a war-criminal and beatified by the Vatican, is a real disgrace.
