The place left me awestuck!! You really need to go and see this place...just for the natural beauty and flowers...the colors...the atmosphere! I almost fell asleep after lunch!

In th village of Monte you will find this lovley church with a magnificent view over the valley where Funchal is situated. Go there by cable car or by bus 20 or 21 to Monte. If you have the stomach for it you can go by sledge downhill back to Funchal.

At the end of the trip in the cable car, you can visit this Church full of history. "Senhora do Monte" is the saint patron of Funchal.

So many different sights to take in, traditionally dressed basket drivers, Austrian connections, lovely gardens, a good walk and a gorgeous view of Funchal.

This was a fascinating little church up at Monte, with great view down the mountain. We had a nice little lunch righ around the corner at the Belmonte.

So worth the visit! This church was a wonderful example of just how high human endeavor can aspire to. It was beautiful and inspiring. The paintings and decorations were truly wonderful.

The best part of this visit is the dramatic views from above into the huge bowl surrounding the village. But its well worth the effort.

The church at Monte is a treasure to behold both inside and outside and the view over the south side of the greater Funchal area is second to none. It is chilly up there due to the altitude so bring a windbreaker. The body of the last emperorof Austria/Hungary is there.
