Lots of steps up to this little church but well worth the climb. It was very ornate inside and had descriptive signs on the outer walls which gave the history of the place. More

We went on the first day of the 10 day festival that takes place every year. They were still busy setting up. Decorations were going up and lots of hard work was going into making the area beautiful. We went back on the last day (the 14 August) to find the area had been transformed. We thoroughly enjoyed the festival... More

During our trip to Madeira we visited this church on the same day as we went to Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, (see a separate review.) There are steep steps to get to this classical Portugese church, but it is worthwhile. The interior is very ornate with beautiful paintings and lots of gold gilt, the alter area is particularly ornate. There... More

It's a good idea to take a bus up to Monte, and then the cable car to the Botanical Gardens. You get magnificent views, see how the locals live, and, of course, see the church itself. The 'Senhora' herself seems to be a tiny one, but the interior is worth seeing.Perhaps it would be better to visit the place on... More

Take public transportation to visit this site. A great view from the top. Please take the wicker sleigh for the trip down. It's an inexpensive fun ride. A no obligation souvenir photo of your ride is made available at a cost at the end of the ride. A public bus or taxi can be picked up here for the rest... More

The statue and tomb of former emperor Carlos of Austria who died at Funchal in 1922, considered by us Belgians as a war-criminal and beatified by the Vatican, is a real disgrace. More
