We were recommended by our hotel to go to this orchid house. It is linked to the Botanical gardens in Madeira. On arriving, we thought it was just a house with some garden but quickly realised that there was enclosure after enclosure. Even in December it was lovely. A great find and well worth going if you like orchids. The... More

A bus ride and then a walk of 15-20 minutes, some of it up and down steep stretches of road, mean a taxi is the best way to get there unless you are fit. It is worth the effort, though, as you can see a huge variety of orchids in something like their natural setting. Great coffee and cake, except... More

An out of the way place which you will need a taxi to get there, the place is for real orchid enthusiasts, I think! The place looks run down, very little signage and the little cafe is a tip. A 5 euro entrance fee for what? I think this place has seen better days. Avoid.

A taxi is a must to get here, but when you do, it's a wonderland of the unusual and exotic. It's not a manicured showpiece but plants as they live but the wonder in each specimen is a delight. The added bonus is they sell plants and seed for the intrepid grower. Also do internet orders which is a bonus... More

We went by taxi and I would advise this as we would ever have found it, and it is up a steep hill. It isn't the largest of places but there are a great number of orchids, all beautiful and many other plants ferns etc. There is a basic cafe serving coffee, milkshakes, and cakes. The coffee is not the... More

The are many varieties of orchids, but the garden is not well-tended and very small. We went around twice in 1 hour. Everything looks old and is falling apart. Not worth 5 EUR entrance fee and bus ride. Unless you are real orchid enthusiast, do not go there.

After a long walk up we found the Garden high up at the other end of Funchal. The man in charge spoke very good English and was very enthusiastic in telling us all about his plants. It was really interesting and informative. He was very apologetic about the fact that in the awful storms 4 years ago the roof over... More

As a dabbler in growing orchids I wanted to visit this garden which I had discovered on the internet, We went by taxi which was very convenient as the bus stop is some distance downhill (very steep) from the garden. The garden is under cover and full of orchids and other plants in a subtropical setting. I must have taken... More

Don't go expecting beautiful, well-tended gardens, it isn't like that! What it does have is the biggest variety of orchids of all sizes and varieties I have ever seen. These are arranged in a series of covered spaces, up a hillside, probably not much bigger than some domestic gardens. It is quite difficult to find if you travel independently and... More
