Not so easy to find, but worth the effort

Worth the extra effort to find. Not so well signed. More orchids than you can shake a stick at. Also an unbeatable view over Funchal.

We walked to this garden from our hotel. The orchid collection is beautiful. The coffee, mint tea from the garden, the carrot cake and apple cake and philadelphia with passionfruit cream on the terrace overlooking Funchal is heavenly.

These gardens are an easy walk from the bottom entrance of the botanical gardens. We were very impressed with the orchids which are cultivated here by an orchid expert who built up this collection and a very unique garden. After visiting, walk back to the main road and a taxi will cost about 10 euros back to Funchal. (or await a bus!)

A vast array of orchids of every size, kind and colour. The owner showed a large party of us round and his enthusiasm was infectious. Well worth a visit, even for non gardeners

Probably less than half of the orchids were in bloom and still there is heaps! Anyone interested in rare orchids will find it well worth 5 euros. A taxi from central Funchal will cost less than 10.

The garden was below my expectation. If you expect a great array of orchids in bloom you will be disappointed,at least in January. The notice in the garden admits that not all the plants will be in bloom and it's mainly a conservation project. Hopefully, more of the plants will be in bloom other times of the year. The location... More

Was recommended to visit this site and although it was great to see how extensive their collection was, we didn't see as many as expected. Perhaps it was not the best time of the year to visit but the owners were very helpful to advise how best to look after our UK varieties. Best to get a cab to visit,... More

We go there after monte tropical garden and we were just impressed how amazing garden is. It takes you like 45minutes to see all, after exit you can buy the root of orchids too. They have a lot of colors abd types of orchids. The air is little sultry, so dont wear too much clothes, that must be perfect weather... More

Well worth the 5e entrance fee,we did this as part of a half day trip, takes about an hour, situated up a back street and could be difficult to find by car, but well worth it . Amazing display of orchids put together over the years by a German horticulturalist
