This fortress was opened to the public just recently (last year), and the local government is currently waiting to receive proposals for the renovation of this place. Meanwhile it's open and with free entrance. Only the surrounding areas are open to the public (the inner and upper part is still not accessible), however they offer amazing views to Funchal and... This fort is now used as a Naval complex and as far as I could tell it was not open to the public. The walk from my hotel was a bit steep, but the views from the top were amazing. You can walk around the exterior balconies and even walk down and around almost to the old front gate. I... More

We had been led to believe that the fort was shut but it isn't. Small museum about the fort but the reason for going is the views out over Funchal. There's a bus from the centre or you could walk up from the De Freitas museum if you have made it that far.

Make sure you are ready for the long hike up to fortalenza do pico. No sign posts but I just made in the direction of the fort until I found the entrance. Views from the top are amazing.

This isn't a stately home, it is more like an English Heritage property. Well kept up 16/17 century fortress, great to walk round the ramparts. No entry charge. Quite a slog to get to, visit the frieta da Clara (A poor Clares convent) on the way up, there also a museum you pass.

It took us the best part of the morning to find the fort which we had espied from the cable car. The fort does not appear to be sign posted at all. We eventually stumbled across it guessing it to be at the end of castle street. Good views from the walls but not much in the way of exhibits.... More

It sits up high on the western edge of town and is readily visible from the water. It is a 25 minute walk from the city center. It is steep but not a problem for anybody reasonably fit. The gardens around the fortress are worth visiting. There is a small museum inside the fortress. The things of interest are the... More

- free entry, not included in tours, ask the locals for "fortaleza do pico" or just point - stone walls, great views of the city - small museum inside, explains a bit of history - not many things to see, 20 min visit is ok - close to Quinta das Cruzes, so you can include that in a one and... More
