Don't be fooled by any of the exterior - this place was so wonderful inside - the pictures don't do it any justice - every church we past that was open to the public (Monday), so we went in a few. worth checkin out before you go for a walk.

Next to municipal museum and santa Clara convent this is an other example of a Madeira religious monument,in similar style as the cathedral and "ingrega do collegio "nearby.

Found this lovely church while wandering around Funchal. It is beautiful and very peaceful to sit and contemplate. Surprised it is not in more guide books.

This was another surprise find on a wander about. It's a small but very ornate church, the chandeliers and paintings are great. There's always an air of calm in a church and it's good to stop and be peaceful every now and then. The view of the houses and rooftops is great from the top. Cool and grounding.

We found this church by accident and were so pleased we did! Very pretty interia and peaceful. The climb to the roof is well worth it for the wonderful views over the roof tops.

We have been to Madeira several times but on each visit we go to this church. It is a haven away from the hustle and bustle and is simple and unspoilt. We usually sit a while just to enjoy the peace. In the style of many Madeiran churches wood is used a lot (Madeira means wood) and can be admired.... More

A beautiful little church and a Funchal must do...close to the centre. Go after 3pm to be on the safe side. We recently had the pleasure of listening to the young choir practising...wow! If you would like a little quiet time do go and enjoy the calm, paintings and carvings

We visited Funchal during a cruise to the Azores and Canaries and had pre-booked a rental car to get around the island. We spent some few hours during the afternoon walking around this interesting city and the Cathedral was one of the sights we wanted to see. Whilst the exterior may not be spectacular the inside certainly is with cedar... More

You can stop off here whilst walking uphill to Quinta das Cruzes/Museu Frederico. Its also quite near the Sacred Art Musuem. Filled with gilded woodwork framing scenes from the Life of Christ and rustic scenes of angels reaping corn, gathering grapes as ingredients for the Last Supper. The nave ceiling is decorated with patterns of roses, lilies and columbines. Glazed... More
