This is at the far end of the Prom and is a lovely old building well worth a view and a wander and to look out to sea from the Fort. Its free if you just want to wander around the fort but you need to pay if your going to go in to the exibitions, Well worth a wander.

An extensive, impressive building dating back hundreds of years. Wonderful sea views from the ramparts and lots of steps, nooks and crannies etc. there's a museum to visit and a very good quality restaurant within the walls. Located at Eastern end of promenade,ie opposite end to marina. When we visited, there was a lovely 60s Opel on display and a fabulous 1930s open... More

We came to see the contemporary art museum housed within the Sao Tiago Fort but left dumb founded. I was expected something along the lines of Serralves in Porto, instead the gallery was four or five rooms of extremely valuable but unspectacular paintings (worth more than my house the gallery guide declared!) a couple of metal sculptures that resembled man... You are here, so you may as well see all the main cultural attractions. As most other reviewers have said, nothing special about the building itself, but the views are very good. Did not eat here, but the menu looked very good and plenty of people were.

At the edge of the old town of Funchal lies this yellow fortress overlooking the sea. The views alone are worth visiting this site but don't expect a myriad of rooms and towers to explore. The gaudy yellow colour makes this an unusual building and for visitors looking for a place to eat there are many opportunities both inside and... More

Off putting bright yellow fortress but worth a visit for the views and very good diviner & service. Sea bass a speciality. Be sure to reserve a window table to look out through the gun ports at cruise ships lit up in the bay a few 100 metres off.

Certainly worth a dander if you are in the area,if just to view a different scenic perspective of the city to the right, and the cliffs to the left.Wasn't quite sure what to make of the vibrant turmeric/mustard colour that colours the fort-but hey,it certainly stands out.Almost felt like interlopers in the harboured area,as there were many locals gathered there, some just... Typical local fortress situated in the old fishers' village. Not much to see inside the fortress but the views and atmosphere are worth a little climb to the top terraces of the fortress. The restaurant inside the fortress is attractive to wine and dine the better food in Funchal.

We primarily went here on the basis that it was a contemporary art museum. The fort itself is an interesting historical structure with views over the bay along its ramparts. It didn't appear that you could go into all of the rooms, which is a shame. Our bug bear was the fact that this so called "museum of modern art"... More
