On trip advisors recommendation we visited here, we were not disappointed. This is a small friendly family run winery. We were given a personal tour, and allowed to wander around alone. We were given lots of information and all our questions were answered, topped off by free samples of their delicious wine.

This place is the most traditional of the Madeira wine producers and the one that doesn't export (pity). I spent a while here and it was the best time I had in Madeira. The two brothers that make the wine speak good English and are fantastic--funny, friendly and philosophical. Their wines are fantastic, well-priced and unique. You get to climb... More

We visited Artur de Barros during our honeymoon in Madeira after reading great reviews on TripAdvisor. The visit did not disappoint! The 2 brothers who run the place are so accommodating and really make your visit authentic and personal. We very much enjoyed the visit and tasting. Upon leaving, we poked our heads into a large wine tasting place nearby... More

Lovely place and very good and informative service.Their wines are hand made, matured in wooden barrels using old methods and that can be tasted.Compared to the commercially produced Madeira wine, their wines had a soft and aromatic palate. They were like nectar, alcohol was not pungent in them at all. When you visit, take money with you since it's cash only. Highly recommended to those... More

If you are even remotely interested in Madeira wines, this is the place to visit. Having started my day in search of the story of Madeira wines (with a little [if dangerous] amount of knowledge under my belt) I visited some of the big name producers. All of whom told a good, if a little sales heavy story. On my... More

Liked the wine. Disliked the luggage limit which restricted how much we could carry! If you go on a recce when the doors are closed, there is nothing on the outside to indicate where it is or if it is still there. Don't worry, it is and it's a bit of a tardis.

I highly recommend a stop at this winery. There's a larger tasting room next door, but you definitely need to make this a stop. The owners of this small family owned winery are happy to explain the different types of Madeira wines and let you taste them. This is not the syrupy sweet Madeira most of us know. We came... More
