Open to the public since 1991, this masterpiece includes one of the most important tile collections in Portugal. The tiles exhibited amidst the tropical vegetation represent several ages, coming from palaces, churches, chapels and private houses throughout the former Portuguese empire.

This really is a steep garden but so worth seeing. We enjoyed the mineral museum (nice and cool) and even though it was a hazy day so the views out to sea were rather spoilt, there are so many nooks and crannies to explore in the garden and such lovely planting that we were very glad we made the trip.... Recommend getting the cable car up from Funchal as the views are spectacular. As other reviewers have said the gardens are much more than a collection of plants and the museum displays are very interesting. It was nice to be able to get a lift back to the exit after our two hour descent to the lake as well!

Great place to visit. beautifully kept this is more than a garden, it is an authentic museum where every corner has something unexpected waiting for you...A must after a ride up in the Cable Car.

We loved our visit to the gardens, laid out on many levels the use of water to draw you though your journey was magical.

Both brilliant, I personally liked the Botanical gardens the best and these are cheaper than the Tropical Gardens but both are well worth a visit and make a very good day out.

Wonderful gardens, full of plants, waterfalls, painted tiles and two small museums. One contains African carvings which are excellent and the other is full of the largest semi precious gems stones, in rock form,I have ever seen. A small glass of Madeira wine awaits you in the little cafe, where drinks and snacks can also be purchased. Leave at least... More

Variety of tropical trees and plants - merited a longer visit than the 45 minutes we spent there. A haven of tranquility in another world.

Be prepared to walk on steep hills, rough pathways. Worth a visit but don't expect the snack bar to offer very much. Choices of sandwiches and other refreshments is very limited, not easy if you are looking for sugar free/dairy free etc. Suggest you take your own pic nic.

One could easily spend an entire day here. There are so many little discoveries to be made. They are not like traditional English gardens, and are built on quite a slope, which could make it difficult for those with mobility issues. I have bad knees and climbing back up the hill was very strenuous. Well worth the trip though and... More

This is, hands down, one of the most lovely gardens we have ever visited. It is a very lush forest, with an amazing variety of ferns and orchids, and pleasantly cool in the burning afternoon Madeira sun. The park is adorned with red Japanese bridges, Madeira tile-art, Zimbabwean wooden sculptures, a small mineral crystal museum, a big aviary with colorful... More
