A large garden belonging to the palace which is now owned by a bank. Regrettably, the palace wasn't open to visitors but the gardens are superb with different areas to interest everyone. It is very well kept and has golf type buggies for the less able visitors. There is a museum and display area which had minerals and African rock... More

Take waterproof/umbrella, can rain there when sunny at the coast. Cable car ride gives good views. Mineral museum great.

Despite a deluge of rain marking the start of my visit, the tropical gardens at Monte are extremely beautiful. The place is a true paradise and a magical way to spend a few hours.

All here was beautiful, spent 2 days here. So much to see. Spent both days wondering about taking pictures, checking out all the different plants, views, very impressed the the Japanese Garden and Koi ponds.

This attraction is easily accessed by cable car from Funchal but more of a challenge if you are driving a hire car. The roads are steep and narrow and parking can be difficult. The site is truly tropical in nature and paths are either pebbly or stony. Good footwear is imperative as we saw one old gent slip and fall... More

It's quite a steep walk down on cobbles, so wear comfortable shoes, but it is worth the walk down to the lake. It is absolutely beautiful. Pace yourself as there is lots to see. Cafe could be better / a second cafe on the other side of the gardens would be a good idea. Never seen so many varied and... More

Not a great deal to see, and didn't really meet expectations. The gardens were smaller than expected, and even with a stop at the café we had seen everything in about 2 hours. We found one aviary, some nice Coy carp and a variety of plants and shrubs, but nothing exceptional.

This garden is very beautiful in a staged way. There are many statues, displays of tiled scenes, architectural features, ornamental ponds with water features, Japanese garden etc. we were given a plan of the garden when we entered and found this clear and enabled us to plan our route. It is very steep & even the relatively fit won't want... More

We went to the gardens from the Monte cable car and paid an all inclusive price. As the gardens are on a slope you need to be fit to get round it all and back up the hill again. As we went in September there was virtually nothing in flower and only greenery which was very disappointing. I thought a... More
