You have to be fit to enjoy this trip. Remember that Madeira is a mountainous island and this Palace and Garden are best reached by cable car. Remember also that as you walk down into the gardens and visit the arear around the palace that you have to walk back up. Because of this there is a golf buggy trip... More

Every corner you take something new to take in. So peaceful and so beautifully maintained. Go by the cable car on a combined ticket and don't forget to take your free Maria wine at the terrace cafe.

We enjoyed wandering round here looking at all the different plants etc. The rock room was fabulous.

I have visited this garden five times now and think it is the most enjoyable garden to visit in funchal. It is whimsical and kitsch in places but beautiful and fascinating too. There is so much to explore. The garden is on many levels and is steep - the climb up is hard work, no denying it. We managed it... More

Mistake 1 was to go on a public holiday (1 July): it was busy. the second blunder was to go at this time of year. It would have been better in Spring. I can see plenty of ferns at home and colour was lacking apart from green. To be fair, it was maybe just the wrong time to visit.

There are different areas to these gardens, the flowers are brilliant colours and there is a café to enjoy lunch with a good choice of food and drink. Well worth a visit while in Monte if you don't want to do the toboggan ride.

These gardens are mainly oriental & when I visited in July, lacked colour. The buildings, statues & other similar features are all very tired - as was I due to the severe steepness of the paths. Go to the Jardin Botanico - it is much nicer.

So, Went in June 2014, loved it. It's a nice drive up if you've got a car or an enjoyable cable car if you don't mind heights. Lovely gardens, good museum, if you arrange to spend 4 hours there you'll get to see everything and you won't have to rush around. Very expensive coffee shop but it is a tourist... More

We enjoyed our time there. It's nice to walk in this place, there are many interesting and nice looking plants and some ponds. It has an asian look. We saw some swans, geese and a turtle there

I was amazed how green and beautiful this was, and its huge! There was always something hidder round the cornner, like the history of portugal made in tiles and the mini waterfalls and ponds. I loved it.
