Spent a hot day in August in this lovely, shady garden. Have visited it before, but even on a second visit it was still as charming as during our first visit in 2003. The place has a lot of steps, so it is not a suitable place if you have problems with mobility. There was also a presentation of Portuguese... More

The gardens are really spectacular. There are so many aspects to them and it is a lovely way to spend an afternoon. The only criticism I have is that the map they give out at the ticket booth is not very accurate and it's quite easy to get a bit mixed up. It also doesn't really explain what things are.... More

A nice garden in the hilly part of Funchal. For us it was refreshing escape from the down town heat. Garden is filled with variety of flowers. Just sit on the bench and enjoy the view and the green that surrounds you.

A very complex layout with loads of paths shooting off in different directions. Some very nice flowers on great setting. You need to wear sensible shoes as the paths are steep and hard on the feet. The African art was a bit weird and there was some modern sculpture mixed into a Japanese garden. I did not like the ceramic... More

Took the cable car up and walked back into funchal and was well worth it. A beautiful mix of traditional and unusual spread over quite a large area so plenty to keep you occupied. Amazing views over Funchal.

We took the cable car up to the tropical gardens. As soon as we entered the gardens we went 'wow'. The gardens are extensive and very hilly so beware! We did see a golf cart transporting people so do not be put off. Well worth a visit because the gardens are beautiful. There is a photo opportunity at every turn.... More

Combine this with the cable car up the mountains to Monte. Worth seeing. Very shady so good even on a hot day. Kids may be bored here but will enjoy the cable car experience.
