These gardens are spectacular. We stayed away from some of the other gardens because it was February and the flowering plants would be limited. Walking through these gardens is a tremendous way to spend an afternoon. It is so relaxing, beautiful, and peaceful, a great way to get away from the city. The many different vistas provided by the different... More

Beautiful water gardens with an excellent little café. The gardens and the museum offer you constant glimpses of the city and the sea below.

It didn't start well when an unhelpful ticket seller at the cable cars sold us the wrong tickets. Staff at the top not interested in helping - rude and talking on their telephone. The map and signs are poor, the eating facilities woeful. Won't go back

Great plants, great art work, lovely walks if perhaps a little hilly for some tastes! Easy to spend a whole day here. Get the cable car, magnificent.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden can be reached by the cable car originating in old center of town, Funchal or by cab. This is a hillside development with recommended entry at the top (Monte), with downhill trails and steps wandering through numerous water spillways and small ponds. There is a wide variety of trees, plants, and koi ponds throughout. Most... More

I spent here two and half hours and could spent much more! It looks rather wild but has all necessary convivience: marked routes, clean toilets and nice cafe with snacks and drinks. There are very picturesque view everywhere in the park (a lot!), there are no crouds of people and relaxed atmosphere. As a bonus you have a drink of... More

Visited here on an escorted tour. The guide we had knew so much about it that it was very interesting. Loved the precious stone displays. The gardens were amazing.

We had read that February was not the best time to visit Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, but since we were here we decided to go anyway, not expecting too much. We took the cable car up (we bought the combi ticket cable car and gardens) and had a look at the church first. There is a nice view from the... More

We chose to take the public bus up to Monte. This was inexpensive and provided good views over the City as we climbed to Monte.Others may prefer to take the cable car.The gardens are very extensive, and are the grounds of a palace - not open, and with an abandoned look.. Much of the garden theme is oriental, with plants,... More
