We travelled in the cable car which was lovely; the gardens are beautiful. Make sure you wear comfy shoes and allow plenty of time to see everything. You can easily spend three hours or more there. The café there is disappointing, however. A short walk up the hill we found Quinta do Monte Hotel. We had a beautiful lunch there... More

The bottom half of the garden is made up of forest with every tree and every plant labeled so you know what you are looking at. The top... More

Had a fabulous visit to the Tropical Gardens during our stay on Madeira. Highly recommended but wear stout shoes, take a camera and water.

There were many interesting sections to this garden, which is extensively spread out across the hillside. It is steep in parts, but a buggy (2 euros) is available to get around if needed. The garden consists mainly of trees and shrubs, but also contains some interesting flowers. The garden is easily accessible by bus - there is no need to... More

Beautiful tropical gardens, you can take all day if you want. To see the gardens you start at the top and it winds down to the bottom of gardens where the cafe is. It's all up hill coming back but there is a buggy car service but didn't use it so I don't know if it is free Gorgeous Japanese... More

Go by bus... (yellow routes) stay on to Telefonica top of gardens When at bottom look for the 2 Euro shuttle up the hill....by main lagoon...you not regret taking the buggy back as Very Very Steep.
