The easiest way to visit the Monte Tropical Garden is by using the funicular up to the village (and then a second funicular down to the Botanical Gardens if you wish. You can get a combined ticket including all three elements and add the Tropical Gardens separately). The views over the harbour and city are quite spectacular. We timed our... More

We got the 21 bus from Funchal, which was packed with locals and tourists alike, very cheap 2Euros, there is a lovely Cafe on top of a high wall just above bus stop. You then walk along path as if going to the Tobagans, now this is were signage for the Garden seems to dissappear! carry on along the road,... More

We were looking forward to this visit and were not disappointed however I would like to visit again earler in the year as we had missed most of the floral displays The gardens were obviously well cared for but one word of warning there is a bird section. And the birds overall are not kept in good surroundings

My husband and I have been to prettier gardens so were a little disappointed by this one. It is nice but nice is probably as far as we'd go in terms of a description. There are some pretty ponds and waterfalls built in to the landscaping design and if you visit on a quiet day it is very peaceful but... More

I liked everything about it, water features, meandering paths and the views. Some of the steps were a bit tricky for my husband. You really do need sensible footwear. I found the map a bit tricky to follw at times and we ended up going the wrong way a few times, bit it was worth going.

Rain threatened all the time, but we persevered and enjoyed not only the garden but the history panels and eyeballing a Madeira Firecrest (indigenous rare bird) as well as the local breed of chaffinch (in the cafe of course!) before struggling back up the amazing steeps to the exit.

Although it is recommended as a full-day trip it's better to spend there not more than three hours. Nice tropical garden, yet very steep and require a physical effort to get through. Maps of the place are not on scale and it takes time to find some areas in the park that you would like to visit.

Visited here today and was most surprised at how lovely they were. Spent a good few hours taking in all of the views and scenery. Definitely worth a visit so set aside a few hours. And remember, what goes up must come down and vice-versa. A few steps to climb in areas, but not at all once. Take your camera... More

Lovely Garden, only issue we had was could have done with an exit at bottom of garden - as had to climb up hill to get out again. Lovely sculptures etc, nice walk round.
