Nice botanical gardens although already a bit too late to see lot of blooming flowers. We took the trip with the cable car to the Monte and the walked along the Levadas back to the Gardens. The walk was 7km long and the last bit was very steep. The rest of the walk was very pleasant along the water channels.... More

Well kept formal gardens with a wide variety of sub-tropical and desert plants. Spectacular elevated position overlooking Funchal. Can get very busy with tourists particularly when cruise ships are visiting. Cafe facilities are overstretched. More

I was rather disappointed by this visit as I had expected more in terms of a riot of colour - the same very colourful area is shown on every promotional item. There is a wonderful display of cacti and succulents - in my youth I collected these but never had any so big - they were enormous specimens. The collection... More

The planting is bold and colourful. There's a big orchid house (although none in flower at the time of our visit in March - the Flower Festival in Funchal town made up for that!) and the grounds are well cared for. The views down over Funchal to the port and the sea are terrific. There's a cafe in the gardens... More

If you go to see any of the wonderful gardens in and around Funchal, don't miss this one. Also don't miss the very many trails that it includes. You will find exotic plants and trees in profusion. Don't miss the oppportunity of a great view from the terrace cafe of Funchal. Well worth the bus fare. More

You will need sat nav to find this by car but worth the trip when you get there and good value for money. Don't expect Kew gardens standards. Plant maintenance is good and interesting. Labelling is poor and faded and the aviary very poorly maintained. The 'museum' is musty and uninteresting. More
