We loved stopping off here at every opportunity, to rest in the shade on the numerous benches and watch the little lizards on the walls. Paths and walkways were always swept and litter free. We had a drink in the cafe which was reasonably priced.

In the town centre this is a lovely small public garden cannot be missed. On one day a week a craft market is held here.

Every time I need to kill some time or relax in the city, I go to the São Francisco garden. Scattered benches, surrounded by trees and flowers, with birds singing and sometimes live ambient music wafting in from the Ritz café and Café do Museu, it's one of my favourite spots in Funchal.

These gardens are perfectly located in the centre of Funchal and offer a wide range of trees and shrubs with ample seating in the paved walkways.

Small but lovely to spend some time relaxing and absorbing the environment. There are benches scattered around and many types of plants to enjoy. We are glad we stopped here, you will be too.

Also known as the Municipal Garden, this little haven just a couple minutes' walk from the marina is only small, but is absolutely beautiful. It's an established garden, exceedingly well maintained and is immediately opposite the Ritz Café which means you can sit and enjoy their live music from the shade of the garden, there is a beautiful pond with... Nice garden, good place to sit with an ice cream listening to the guitar players outside the Ritz. There was also a craft market there on the Saturday.

You will see this garden at the main square where the main cathedral is. It is small but you have to sit down for a while and take a break there. There are nice palm trees and many flowers.
