Not the loveliest I've seen, but this somber church provides some insight to the religious life of Funchal. If you're in the area to lunch or shop, be sure to take a quick look around. Note that opening hours are limited and not rigidly adhered to. If you need to wait, you can enjoy the people watching or possibly an... More

Cathedral is centrally situated and easy to get to. Quite small for a cathedral, fairly sombre and seems to be closed more often than it is open - shortly after we arrived (about 12.15) they put the lights out and came round telling people that they had to leave as it was closing. We visited a number of more interesting... More

This 15th century cathedral has an interesting mosaic roof made from Madeira juniper and Madeira laurel-wood.The cathedral closes around 1800-1900 and is free to visit. There are 5 more churches of similar architecture in central Funchal, all white-washed and black-basalt-lava stone outside and ornate gilded woodwork inside.

Located on the main road through Fuchal, this is easily found but is rather basic really and I would not make a special trip to see it, I preferred the small church in the valley of the Nuns.

The cathedral has a long history and it is charming but it is fairly small and very plain inside apart from the east end. It's somewhere that you have to go to while you're in Funchal but don't expect to stay for more than (half an hour assuming you're not going for a service)

Looks very plain from the outside but the Cathedral is sumptuous inside. No problem taking photos without flash. The cathedral is in a lovely position at one end of the main marble paved street. As it was Christmas it was flanked by 2 angel decorations beautifully lit up after dark.

We got in on our second attempt due to lots of services. Well worth a look but sadly where the leaflets should have been there were none!

This is firstly a church, nothing like a Sistine chapel to be sure, but with its own beauty and it feels like a holy place. We arrived at 11 and mass was 11.15 so the place was busy. We sat through mass although not Catholic we are Christian. This showed the Cathedral the way it should be. Don't expect an... More

One over the top Catholic Cathedral is very much like any other. This one was fine and not as OTT as many but offered nothing you haven't already seen loads of times before.
