This is the main cathedral of Funchal (& Madeira). As such it is interesting to pay it a visit, but it is not the most beautiful church you will ever see.

A trip to the island, however short, would not be complete without a short visit to the Cathedral. The great wealth that this island paradise produced in its hay day is displayed in a variety of exotic styles. The church flowers, as you would expect, are always of the highest standard.

A very nice example of sacred art in Madeira. Very nice altar and paintings, wonderful ceiling made out of trees from the native forest, well worth a visit.

The main doors were open and people were just going in, we went in and were knocked out by the lavish beauty. Although there were a large number of tourists in, the atmosphere was stillness and calm.

The Cathedral looks a bit plain on the outside for a European cathedral. Inside does get a little better. I've been a couple of times and it always seems shut, so was surprised to see it open. It's worth a visit if you are passing. What is nice are the small shops and restaurants around it. It seems to be... More

Se cathedral is a place where the faithful still pray throughout the day, so the casual visitor should respect this. The cathedral has some beautiful monuments and paintings which you would Need to bring a guide of your own to interpret as there is no guide book available to buy there. The history of the cathedral can be found in... More

We visited the Cathedral to escape the heat for half an hour or so. The Cathedral doesn't look overly impressive from the outside but it is very impressive on the inside. You can light a tealight and say a prayer for 20c or just do it yourself for free. Overall a calm and peaceful place to visit and escape the... More

Plain outside hides a beautiful interior. Walk quietly around as the locals pop in to pray. Cameras are allowed. Check the opening times. I found it very peaceful
