This cafe was recommended to us by a friend and very much lived up to our expectations. We went there for lunch twice and sat in the cool shade of the terrace, enjoying a spot of people watching. The staff are most efficient and the food is excellent. Salads, meat dishes, sandwiches and specials were all freshly prepared and delicious.... More

This is not just a collection of objets d'art and paintings left over from renvoation of the churches. The Flemish paintings are worth seeing - some are good quality. Amazing to see how the portrayal of the Holy Family has changed in more modern artwork. Its worth the small payment fee to wander around for an hour or so. Translations... More

Not really worth paying to see what is on display. You would be far better off visiting the Vatican in Rome if you want to see sacred art. It's a shame the Catholic Church don't sell all the stuff there to museums and use the money instead to help the poor.

How did Flemish paintings get to Madeira? The answer is that rich merchants sold their sugar crops in places such as Antwerp and brought back Flemish paintings to adorn their churches. Although the paintings are not quite top quality, being mainly by assistants or students of the great masters, they are worth seeing. There is also a big collection of... More

Whilst this museum will appeal to academic art historians and theologians, it will also interest anyone with only a passing interest in Flemish and Portuguese art. Whilst other reviewers have commented correctly on the labelling only in Portuguese, I should like to emphasise each room has descriptions of each numbered item in several languages including English and German, so labelling... Some interesting pieces but nothing world-class - ok for price (3 EUR) - 2 floors - can be done in 30 minutes - recommendable as there is not much else to see in Funchal

This museum was just the right size not to be boring, but suffered from a distinct lack of seating. The art was gorgeous and absorbing but frankly after walking my tush off for 3 weeks all over the island the last thing my back had patience for was standing for 2 hours through a museum. The second issue I had... More

Takes about an hour to visit. Situated in a palace with stone stairs and cobbled hall. Don't buy the leaflet as it doesn't give much information. I loved the ornate wood-carings in particular a relief of the Last Supper. The restaurant attached is excellent.

Only 3 Euro entry over two floors. Predictably, very catholic in content. Lots of silver, some sculpture and quite a few paintings. The processional cross of Funchal is housed here. The items are labelled in Portugese only. The additional leaflet offered on entry for 1 Euro is only a history of the collection and does not refer to the individual... More
