Excellent location for 'people' watching and street cafe culture. Watch the Taxi drivers saving fuel by 'pushing' their vehicles into taxi rank position along the roadside??

Best avoided for the time being due to the huge regeneration works taking place. But dont let it put you off going to `madeira - there is so much more to see and do - honest.

During our first visit to Madeira the Avenido do Mar was partly under construction. Due to the flooding of the last years they had to do something on the canal which is ending into the sea. a nice avenue, along the sea costline of Funchal. At the moment there is a lot of working labour and construction... so not very nice.

Very convenient avenue for those who visit Funchal! Near the cruise terminal, it's in the town center and full of restaurants and shops! Beautiful views from there to the top of the town of Funchal!

Avenida do mar was closed and boarded up do to reconstruction of the waterfront areas and the beach. You were really not able to see much as the construction walls were in place and tractors and cranes were the order of the day.

Pleasant enough stroll, very little atmosphere, went during the day, beggars and restaurant staff plying for trade a bit put offing. In the evening extremly quiet. True no Starbucks but there is a Big Macs and a Pizza Hut.
