We loved the rich collection of furniture, silverware, porcelain and other objects museum has. One can see how rich families of Madeira used to live. There are descriptions in each of the rooms which give an idea about the display, although they could have been more interesting. The garden is small but picturesque with Manueline windows, tombstones, and a chapel.... More

This large manor is located in a green corner in the city. It can be an uphill battle to get there as the street is very steep and even then the museum entrance is at the top of some stairs but it's worth the effort. The museum houses a varied collection of furniture from the 16th until the 19th century... More

We visited this Museum on International Tourism day when entry was free. We enjoyed a stroll through the garden with lots of photo opportunities. The house itself is beautifully preserved example of how rich Madeirans lived in times gone by. We particularly enjoyed the room full of old black and white photos of Madeira. We spent a lot of time... More

Interesting to while away an hour or so. Furniture was interesting but the gardens really aren't up to the standard of the other Quintas we visited. It was free the day we went although we couldn't quite work out why. The attendants were certainly in a fairly bad mood after telling all the tourists it was free. Café was shut... More

This place gives you fascinating glimpses of how wealthy Madeirans lived in times gone by. There's a real sense of how British, French and other North European tastes came to influence an island so far from home, and it's all done with an understated charm. There are room-by-room information sheets (in several languages, including English) if you want to know... More

We loved this museum as it had some of the best art work we saw in Madeira. The house is beautiful and interesting with lots to see and absorb. The gardens are very tranquil. We arrived just after 12 on a Saturday to find the museum closed until 2pm so enjoyed a long leisurely and cheap lunch in the small... More

This museum and garden situated in a street up the hill away from the port and main streets of Funchal is a great place to spend an hour or two, and entrance is only 3 euros per person! The building is also itself historic, and the eclectic collection is fascinating, especially the wonderful 19th and 20th C photographs (look out... More

Claimed to be Funchal's best museum, it is an attractive combination of interesting town garden (with a large plant nursery) and cafe, plus a museum furnished in period style and a spectacular world-class silver collection which even to us (who normally find silver a bit boring) was breath-taking. Don't miss it as it is on the lower ground floor and... More

The museum mainly displays furniture and paintings. We found it fairly interesting to visit for a couple of hours on a wet afternoon but it was fairly limited in what it had to offer. Perhaps the best part was the lower floor where sugar box furniture was on display.

Try to spend a couple of days around Funchal before visiting. There are a lot of photographs and paintings showing how Funchal used to look, and you’ll get more from them if you know what the area now looks like. Good lot of rooms, all with suitable furnishings. The house gives some idea of what life in Funchal was like... More
