Combine this with a tour of Santa Clara monastery to truly get an idea of life in Madeira from the 15th century onwards. The museum is set in a beautiful garden which combines archeological finds with a well appointed garden. Inside, there is minimal information with the artefacts, antiquities and art works which I enjoyed thoroughly. Rather than having information... More

This is a gem of a place - easily missed if you dont look out for it Cant remember how to get in but it wasnt much. Spent over an hour wandering around this beautifully preserved house - crammed full of history - fascinating. Nice gardens too and a lovely cafe. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful gardens, well worth a visit. The house is an interesting mix of objects and art. Though the info isn't that great... We loved the pictures of Madieran life and the old photographs, which also took us to the photography museum! A good respite from the bustling old town or port - worth the climb to escape the crowds!

We decided to visit this interesting museum on a wet and wild Sunday. Free admission, don't know if that is usual on a Sunday. Enjoyable look round, interesting architecture and pieces of furniture. Lovely garden. Well worth a visit.

An elegant house with fine furniture and paintings. A peaceful garden and a ultra modern cafe to enjoy a drink looking out over the harbour and sea.

The museum was very interesting yet relaxed with a variety of artifacts from across the world. I particularly like the garden which, although small, felt peaceful and tranquil.

The entry to the garden is free, so it's worth visiting it. You will find some archaeological remains all the garden. Some very special trees, and many orchids. Unfortunately, the chapel is closed for Restoration. The entry to the museum is not free, but not very expensive. Interesting pieces inside

We didn't go into the museum, just the gardens as pushed for time. The gardens were well worth the visit and a stunning view.

This museum (free on Sundays) has a nice selection of antique furniture, silverware and other artifacts. The gardens are great (incl an orchid section in season) and the views are amazing.
