Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings. It was acquired and restored as a medieval ruin, also in keeping with the romantic taste of the period, by Ferdinand II. The Castle has an irregular plan and is composed of a double belt of walls. The internal wall presents a bailey, battlements and the reinforcement provided by five fortified towers. Inside, the cistern, fed by rainwater, and the Royal Tower are some the most interesting features.

Really, it deserves your time! The castle is located up hill in Sintra and from there, you can even see Lisbon and some tourist attractions in there! Cross fingers for a good weather. You also can see the Pena´s Palace and a wilderness of things... the bus from Sintra´s center is the 434, running every 30 minutes. It costs EUR... More

We visited the castle whilst staying at the Penha Longha hotel. We were told by the hotel that it was a short walk from Sintra. We parked in the town and headed off to the castle. Well, when we finally arrived we were told that we had actually taken the shortest route (about 30 mins up one of the steepest... More

Sintra is an amazing town to visit, and as part of our time there, we had to check out the Moors' Castle. It was fun, although slightly treacherous to navigate the castle. There are neat architectural and historical features and the views from the various turrets and landings are beautiful. They also have some archeological work with explanations and restoration/preservation... More

You can walk all the way to the top but this is an hour and a half walk wich is also very steep. If you're a hiker you'll be fine, if not than don't walk! A faster and better way is to take the bus to the top wich costs about €5

If you're going to do one day trip from Lisbon Sintra has to be it! It's a beautiful old town located just 50 minutes by local train from Lisbon. We hired a little electric car and drove to the ponds, the palace and moorish castle. The castle is a bit of a walk from the entrance but worth the hike.

The castle is a bit of a hike and then once there it is hard to get around for those who have trouble walking or bad knees like me. The view was awesome but very very windy and almost seemed to knock me around a bit. But, it was very interesting and I just took my time getting around the... More

This moorish castle has the perfect observation spot, at the time, and today. From there, you get a 360° view on Lisbon (when not too foggy) and the north. Sintra's historic part can be observed from there too. Great view, Nice for adults and children (above 5 though). People with vertigo, pass your way.

The climb to the walls is unbelievable, it's refreshing thru the woods, spectacular, and once you arrive at the top the view is spectacular and breathtaking. Prepare to walk a lot and be ready to climb the stone alleys. For nature lovers.

Not as stunning as the the interior of the Sintra Palace or the exterior of the Pena Palace, but probably has better views and actually serves a purpose. Quite impressive. Recommended.

A great place to visit especially with kids/teens. Not for the fainthearted as there are quite some, challenging, steps and heights. You can just imagine the knights sitting on the watch towers protecting their land and coast. Very well organized. Parking can be a little bit tricky as there is limited space and lots of sites to visit on this... More
