From the moment we stepped foot into the Parque da Pena we knew we were in for something special. The walk to the palace was breathtaking (literally) as we climbed the hill past tropical plants and elaborate duck houses. Our jaws dropped at he first views of the pastel-colored towers and whimsical Moorish windows. The views from the rooftop and... more

The National Palace of Pena was the highlight of my 10-day trip to Portugal. The architectural detail is beautiful; everywhere you look there is rich detail: tile, carvings, embedded shells, wonderfully whimsical motifs. And that's just on the outside! The inside looks as if King Ferdinand is still summering there. Though the rooms are roped off, the positioning of the... more

A Must to do while in Portugal is to visit Sintra. We joined the daytrip of Inside Lisbon (that I would say is an excellent tour lead by Luis). Prepare for an uphill walk for 15 minutes but it is worth it when you reach the Palace. Beautiful architecture and furnitures dating back to the 19th century. more

I'm just glad I didn't get a heart-attack walking up to this place! It is a bit of a steep hike. I think there's transport up but I thought it would be OK to walk & save a couple euros. My wife is a little younger than me and in good shape. She forgets I spend all my time in... more

We had a car and drove to the palace, parked outside the gardens. We walked through the beautiful grounds towards the top of the park, and then to the palace- amazing views! Really gorgeous place! http://www.parquesdesintra.pt/en/ more

We recently went to the Palace from Lisbon. We took the train from the station at Rossio/Restoradores metro stop to SIntra. Once in Sintra, you can take the bus #434 (3 euros per person) from the outside of the train station to Pena (the bus is a sightseeing bus that stops at several good locations). The prices into Pena were... more

The summer residence of the portuguese Royal Family for years; the National Palace of Pena, is truly amazing. This palace was the 1st palace of the romantic era to be contsructed. It went on to inspire the vast palaces of Bavaria (including the famous one that Walt Disney used as the inspiration for the magic kingdom). Last occupied by the... more

A friend of ours had traveled to Lisbon and told us to take a day-trip to Sintra, while we were in Lisbon for 6 days. We learned late in our trip that many tour bus guides drive to Sintra and along the Estoril coast. Though we were tempted, we decided to take the local train by ourselves out to Sintra... more
