Amazing architecture in the cathedral. The general area is worth a trip out on the 15 tram (prepare to be squashed and mind your bag). It has gardens, bridge-views, a few restaurants.... Well worth a trip.
I enjoyed the view from Padrao dos Descobrimentos and the ticket cost me only 3 euro. Everything was reachable within walking distance-for me preferable than public transport.
Too crowded by tourists. Many many lines everywhere, a bit too tourist oriented and losing authenticity.
Took one of the tourist buses. Don't miss the Maritime Museum and boats and the early airplanes. Excellent cafe at the end, good food, eat outside if weather permits. Then went to the monastery itself and briefly the cathedral. Great cloister, good local exhibits, everything translated into English.
It is the most beautiful place in Lisbon with the monastery, the gardens and the banks of the Tagus river. On a good sunny day it is lovely to stroll in the gardens in the area. Several of the tourist attractions are in this place and it is flooded with tourists.
Tram or more easily bus ride from the centre of Lisbon, Belem offers some of Lisbon's most famous sites, all within easy level walking, including the St Jeronimo monastery, the monument to the Navigators and the Torre de Belem. When I travel I like to visit as many World Heritage sites as I can. I enjoyed three when I visited this area of Lisbon! Talk about history! Wish I'd studied more careful when in school!
Great sights and UNESCO world heritage buildings, good modern art museum and the best custard tarts in the world. Do not miss it.
Belem is a great and very touristy neighbourhood. Lots of great museums and you can walk along the shore. Look for the restaurants near the cathedral for some decent outdoor dining and look into purchasing a Lisboa Card before you good for free and discounted entrance to the historic sites in Belem. A great afternoon adventure.
