It was a really quiet peaceful place. There was a real shortage of water features...or rather water features with actual water in them. The tropical plants had the ability to take you even further abroad than Portugal.

A lovely little paradise in the heart of Lisbon. Don't expect too much and you will be pleasantly surprised - the trees are ancient. Some of the areas are closed, and it was ashame that some of the water features lacked water....it hasn't changed much since my last visit 11 years ago - and that was good :)

We are really hard to please and this was without question one of the highlights of our 3 day trip to Lisbon. We're in our 30s and love gardens/culture/design and these did not disappoint. Costs 2 Euro each to get in (bargain) and we were probably there for 3 hours. Amazing tropical plants from Portugal's ex colonies (and examples of... More

To start - the Tropical Botanic Gardens are in Belem, just behind the famous Pasteis de Nata cafe, just yards from Jeronimos monastery. These are NOT the Botanic Gardens to the west of the Avenida Liberdade. Visiting the gardens in August 2014 was an underwhelming experience compared with visiting in May 2008 for two main reasons: 1) There simply aren't... More

This botanical garden doesn't have so much a unique botanical composition, rather the garden itself is exquisite. It's an old layout with various themed parts, unfortunately the crisis has hit this one very hard. Some parts of the garden are closed of if not downright derelict. That in it's own right makes it even more interesting. It's like discovering a... More

Set aside a good part of the day to see all of these amazing gardens. They range over terraces taking in a huge area with some lovely planting and design. A good cafe is in the middle of the gardens for that essential rest break.

Such a pity that it's not a popular destination!!!! I think this place ( garden) and the Ajuda Palace should be included in all Lisbon city tours!!! Btw, there is a Lisbon City Tours company that we used for our excursions around the city! And they were very accommodating in regards to places that we wanted to visit! The Garden... More

This place was well worth the 2 euros. The time I went the museum wasn't open, but I preferred to sit outside under the palm trees anyhow. They have a butterfly house, with plenty of gorgeous plants, flowers and trees to sit under and relax. Very peaceful experience, highly recommend if you like to be at one with nature.

Towards evening we entered the Italian-style gardens,at the end of a hot day, where it was a true respite from the busy Belem's noisy suburb,as well. The pink wrought iron gates are hard to miss. The park has a lovely plan, easy to amble through with a 400 year old dragon tree.and a flamboyant 18th century fountain fastooned with serpents, dragons, winged fish and... More

After a long queue under the sun for Jeronimos Monastery Cathedral, we discovered a hidden tropical park, just at the corner. Well maintained, with different birds all around (peacock, capercaillie, etc.) and tropical plants, including coffee!
