Owner description: Café Luso is the most renowned Fado and Folklore Restaurant in Portugal. Founded in 1927, its history is the history of Fado music itself, since all major singers and musicians performed here.Located in the Bairro Alto district, one of the most typical and historically rich in Lisbon. Café Luso occupies the charming former wine cellars of a 17th century Palace.

We should, of course, have read the other reviews posted here before going, but this was recommended by our hotel when we asked reception about where to go for an authentic fado experience. The total cost was about 150 Euros. The food wasn't bad, but wasn't special and the performance was truly awful. There were brief moments of fado which... More

My friends and I went there for fado and dinner. First of all you can only hear fado 10% of the time. Rest is silly shows that look like first grade children show! The show finishes at 10pm sharp! And the food is the worst food ever! I ordered chicken and it was served 1 hour and 10 mins later... More

Recommended by the concierge, we made a reservation for dinner and the fado. Had we known we could just reserve a table for fado without going through the dinner, we would have done so. Cafe Luso is located at the end of a street festooned with colourful decorations. It was a festive street with fado cafes. I believe it was... More

One does not go to Café Luso for the food - it is overpriced and not great - but for the Fado, which after 10:30 pm is the only music that you will get there, none of the folk dancing etc. that pads out too many shows. Sure the wine and food are over-priced but for a minimum of 16... More

Wish we had read the reviews first. We were sucked in by the doorman. This restaurant is better suited to tour bus catering. Really expensive, poor service and bad food!

And the fado comes first. The food, like most reviewers have said, is not that good, but the reason is because it's not why you come here. You're not paying for an overdone piece of fish, you are paying the musicians for the performance. Unfortunately, from what I understand about the way fado clubs are set up you have to... More

I was looking for a Bairro Alto live music venue offering other than Fado. I don't dislike Fado but for a whole evening as a solo traveller it's a little too downcast for me. So, having noticed the sign suggesting different styles of music were offered from time-to-time I asked the Cafe Luso door salesman what was being offered that... More

Oh how I wish I had read all these opinions before stepping foot into this place! I had gone to Barrio Alto to watch Fado on my last night in Lisbon, the last night of a splendid holiday in Portugal where everything had been great- until that night. I was going to a place that had been recommended by friends,... More
