When I was told Lisbon had a castle, I thought it would be along the lines of some Disney-esque monstrosity. However this is a real live castle (except no moat and no dashing knights). At some points, I expected a dragon to pop out of no where. You get to climb the inside and outside walls. They have a small... More

This castle is a beautiful place to visit with its high walls dominating the city below and offers the best views of this great city, they also have a great collection of prey birds from falcons to owls and eagles, also lots of peacocks around the gardens(very well kept). A must see in Lisbon

Despite the first afternoon "climb" up the streets to the castle, we were pleasantly surprised by the views and the castle itself. Spend a good 2.5 hours in the area climbing towers or observing historical items or sites. Cracking views of Lisbon as well as.

Castle itself is disappointing as it's mostly just walls. Archaeological site is also poor. Outstanding views over the bay/river and city from the gardens and the castle walls though. Plenty of photo opportunities. A little expensive for what's there.

Surprised how many negative reviews there are - we just went with our two kids (6 and 10) and we all enjoyed it and think it was one of the highlights of our trip. Yes, it's 8.50 entrance for adults but the kids were free. Everything in Europe costs this much (or more) so surprised by the grumbling. We took... More

A huge castle located on a hill, dating back to Moorish times. Several buildings from various periods of history, cannons, sculptures, towers to climb - that in itself is interesting enough, but then there are the views over all of Lisbon, simply breathtaking. Whatever else you do in Lisbon, do not miss this!

I'm not a history buff but we went to the castle twice. The first time we reached an hour before it closed, and were told it would be a waste of our ticket. The second time, we spent almost half a day there. Go there for a long long walk, to build your muscles, to see Lisbon from its tip,... More

Castelo de Sao Jorge can be reached by tram 28E departing from Martim Moniz station (green line). We asked for the stop location and a local pointed the direction and said for us to look for a large crowd gathering. We joined the queue and managed to get on the second tram that passed. Ask the driver to tell you... More

The gardens and views from the castle walls were spectacular but after a long queue to get tickets we were disappointed that there was no audio commentary and there are not many guided tours, the day we went was only Spanish and English was the next day. They could have made more of what was there.

Visited here on a sunny afternoon and thought the €8.50 entrance was well worth it for the view alone, never mind anything else. The whole of Lisbon is below you and you can really spot the different areas/squares etc. Lovely to just sit there ,people watch, take in the view and can even have a glass of wine from a little cart...
