Sitting on top of the hill between Alfama and Mouraria the Castela de S. Jorge is a main visitor attraction in Lisbon and is certainly worth visiting. From the moment you enter the grounds there is lots to see - the views across the city are amazing and many of the internal structures within the castle grounds are fascinating.

Magnificent position with wonderful views. Good range of buildings. There is a café which looked reasonable. Many other local cafes quite expensive as once you have climbed up to castle location you have to take what is on offer

Take a leisurely walk up to the castle. NYU will need comfortable shoes and a camera. There is an elevator that will take you part of the way but it is a lovely walk with charming side streets and alleys to explore. Walk all around and see the views. You can also find the peacocks that hang around and provide... More

worth the trip just to see the views of the city. Not a lot of information around so you needed to read the guide. Museum had some interesting pieces. Take the bus up, it goes all the way, where the trolley does not.

Only Outer Walls of the castle exist in some places, but apart from that only ruins not much in terms of castle remains . The scenic views of the city from here are breathtaking . We felt Entrance fee a little expensive but the views and the general feel of the whole castle is worth the climb to this castle... More

It's well worth the climb just for the views especially as the sun sets over the city. As well as the remaining castle walls there is a museum and an archeological dig site which brings history to life. There us also a cafe so you can build up strength for the journey down!!

The fortress of São Jorge has a dominant position with wonderful views over Lisbon. It can be combined with a super ride by tram 28 through the oldest part of the city Alfama, and not far from the fortress there are numerous vantage points from which one can enjoy spectacular views of the entire city.

The peacocks around the castle is nice, some stairs to be climbed, but the view is worth the effort. Around the castle is a bit bare, but the view along the battlements makes you feel like you are on top of the world, or Lisbon at least.

I didn't know I liked visiting castles until we saw Castelo de Sao Jorge. The views from the top of the castle are amazing. It was one of our favorite sites in Portugal.

Pros - DRAMATIC VIEWS OF bridge, Targus River (in distance) and most of city (Baixa especially closeup) from massive and extensive stone extension walls, ramparts and turrets. Its huge so u can spend a lot of time (2-3 hours) walking round. CONS - pretty bare as most of it destroyed in 1755 quake, never fully restored. Where: Rua de Santa... More
