Its a hike, but if you're game you can skip the funicular and hike through Barrio Alto. Like Rio, you get a sense of community with people milling from bar to bar and music running into each place. A fun night out, in a historic area.

This place is full of character. It is where you go if you want music and late night drinking. People drink outside the pubs on the cobbled streets as there is limited space in the pubs. One bit of advice for the girls who are visiting here, DO NOT wear heels. It would be impossible to walk over the cobbles... More

Well worth a visit during daylight as well as the vibrant bar scene which begins around midnight and goes to dawn. Many interesting shops in historic buildings, such as an ecclesiastical candle maker, rare books and apothecaries. Don't miss the historic cable car down to the water front. Several historic churches on a more managble scale than cathedrals welcome you... More

Some will argue that it has gotten too touristy so that may put me in the minority but I still believe this neighborhood caters to locals and tourists alike. I thoroughly enjoyed walking these winding streets and browsing food menus. I never had a bad meal in the area nor were the prices hiked up because of the big tourist... More

This is a great area however save your time by leaving your visit to the evening. Be prepared to walk around a very crowded area but lots of fun and friendly people. During the day it was totally different, everything is shut up and it's just dirty with no atmosphere - this changes at night time (maybe we didn't see... More

This area is a must experience for the festive feel of the Lisbon people. I enjoyed the charm in the decay and even the grafiti in this historic area. In the day it's great for photos and finding a place to have a drink later at night because in the evening it's not ideal for wandering around. Perhaps due to... More

Nothing spcial to see. Only a place for tourists. All restaurants around are expensive and most of theme, as we found out, were ouverpriced. Just go around, but don't stop!

Went to Barrio Alto to try the bars and many restaurants. There is a place for everyone. We tried a seafood place to sample the local catch and drink the local wines and ports. We also went to a crowded restaurant to sample sardines, cod, octopus and clams. Very tasty. The owners would normally come at the end of the... More

its charming, its full of restaurants and bars, it's busy and bustling during the evening and quiet during the day, the steep, winding streets are full of history and lovely to look at. I love this neighbourhood.
