Bairro Alto is one of the oldest parts of the city after the Alfama. You may find a lot of small restaurants and bars. You shoud visit this place after 10 pm and eat a lot of very good seafood dishes and drink delicious porto!

A must-see in Lisbon. One of the oldest parts of the city, picturesque and charming, with lots of restaurants and bars to choose from.

Lisbon is situated on a number of hills on the coastline of the vast sheltered estuary of the River Tagus. Bairro Alto is situated on one of those hills and provides a compact microcosm of the life of the city. Narrow cobbled streets straggle up and across the steep hill, many are served by the traditional trams (try to avoid... More

Bairro Alto is one of the oldest parts of the city after the Alfama. Lots of steep narrow streets, well-connected trams. A lot of popular restaurants with fado music, where you should definitely stop by and try the famous cod with a glass of green wine, which is also a trademark of Portugal.

It's a beautiful old part of town but not safe at night. I felt threatened and a friend has his pocket picked in a bar. He knew exactly who had done it and when he politely and non confrontationally asked to have his money back it all turned ugly and we were chased with rocks and stones being thrown at... More

Impossible not to fall in love with these tiny narrow streets, that cross each other, end-up, appear, make one to get lost and then.. discover small cozy cafes, fado bars, wineries, galleries, - the true and authentic face of Lisboa..

This place has its little charm when you wander into all the alleys, stopping off for a drink or bite in the cosy bars/restaurants... and at the end you can wander down the hill to either the viewpoint or tram 28...or if you want the single line tram (don't think its part of the Lisbon network so its extra €3.50?)...
