Trust your instinct and you will find some little gems, anyway Lisbon is filled of them if you really go out of the tourist path and you will fall in love

after reading the rave reviews of this small area of Lisbon i guess we were a little disappointed. Its got colourful ribbons hanging over the streets but in general it is a bit of a tatty area. worth a visit i guess to see the tram elevator which has some really smart street art alongside and the views from above... Liked everything about the aerea. Amazing, eclectic, traditional, touristy, and fun bars, pubs, shops, restaurants, and lots of super wine tasting places. Just take the elevator to the top, and explore!

Took the tram up into Bairro Alto, it's a very steep climb. If you buy a combined bus, metro, tram ticket (about 6 euros for a day), you can use that. Some good views at the top of Lisbon, Convent is free of charge and there is another nice church. Walked down, steep but easier than going up.

Beautiful bairro (neighborhood) with an intense night life that combines top notch restaurants and bars. It is also a place where you will mix with a lot of tourist and a lot of locals, so it gets really interesting. As many other places in Lisbon, part of the fun is getting there by foot climbing the endless stairs and discovering... More

Bairro Alto is the rights place to go in the evening and night! During the day, the streets seems like empty but in the evening the bars open and you will meet there everyone. You can enjoy some beer in the street or in a bar and go to the Erasmus Corner. All students know this place and if you... More

Took the funicular up the hill. It might have been quicker to lean into the hill and walk up, but the old trams are interesting and we were photo-bombed by the funicular operator! Once at the top, just wandered around in and out of shops and churches

My wife and I really liked the feel of the Barrio Alto - it's sort of old and a little sleazy - in a good way. It really doesn't come alive until after 8 or 9 p.m. then all of these little bars and restaurants really come alive. From certain points you get great views of the city too. Fully... More
