We love history, but the 4Euros each to walk or ride an elevator up 6 stories to see the view that's the same from the Tower of Belem (worth the money) makes this is a waste of money. We didn't understand about the video and it did not include that and the people at the front desk were rude. Very... More

If you're in the waterfront area anyway, have a look, but I wouldn't go out of your way to see this. It's interesting and kind of impressive in its own way, but it's also unmistakably modern and in sharp contrast to other, centuries-old nearby building and monuments. As a result it feels kind of out of place.

The discovery monument is in fact a substitute of the original center piece of Salazar's force demonstration of his global exposition in 1940. The original monument was designed by the founder of the modern Portuguese architect Porfirio Pardal Monteiro, but a hurricane took it a few months after the construction. The real treat of the Belem riverfront is indeed all... More

The monument itself is beautiful but the surroundings make it even more worth the visit. Take a look at the map of the world in front of the monument and at the marina with the small boats, and take a walk up and down the area. You can also have some coffee or grab a bite in the many cafes-... More

If you are in Belem to see the Monastary and the Cloister and the Berardo Collection, you might as well take a short walk to the riverside to see this monument. The most interesting about it, is the map on the floor in front of the monument. It has the dates that Portugese adventurers discovered parts of the world.

I can understand the visitor to this Monument being disappointed, especially if they just enter the Monument, take the lift to the top and look across the Rio Tejo or out to sea. However, for me there is more to this monument than that. Before entering the Monument, take some time to view the wonderful parade of the explorers, including... More

Monument to the Discoveries is situated in a place, where the Tagus River blends with the Ocean - there is a smell of the sea and on the opposite side you can see e.g. petrol port. The greatness of this monument is impressive - both it's size and details of each figure. It's possible to get inside and climb to... More

The building is nicely done and a fitting tribute to the explorers. It is well worth going to the top and enjoying the views, make sure you look down at the compass mosaic.

You pay 4 euro and a lift takes you to the top where you have a great view. Nice monument but not that much to see
