Go early in the morning so you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the wonderful cloisters that surround a huge courtyard featuring a fountain in the centre. You can almost imagine the monks walking here without any distractions of the outside world. Combine this with a visit to the church next door and see where Vasco de Gama is... More

Impressive as a monument decorated with elaborate stone carvings and an important part of Lisbon's history it seems. Entry is free until 2pm on Sundays and there is also an antiques market until late afternoon on the park outside. Don't forget to stop to taste the Pasteis de Belem in the shop nearby. More

I went to Belem not knowing exactly what to expect other than it was recommended to go see the monastery. I went on a Sunday where entrance is free (nice!), and the weather was really nice - and wow, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is a unique place to be when the sun is shining. There are different exhibitions, but to be... More

Absolutely amazing. Just make sure that you visit on a Sunday before 2 p.m. when it is free. You can have a very cheap day out in Belem if you make sure that you arrive early on a Sunday, visit the tower and the maritime museum first, then get to the monastery by 1.55 p.m. and enjoy an afternoon here... We had previously visited the church adjacent to the monastery to view the tomb of Vasco De Gama and came back the next day to tour the monastery. It was well worth the re-visit. A beautiful building, not damaged by the earthquake of 1755, to take your breath away with its majesty and tranquility. More

I visited the Monastery and cloister in the early part of December. The building was magnificently decorated with detailed stone works out side. The church is free to enter. It houses many noble and famous peoples tombs including Vasco de Gama. Inside, the beautiful stone works and stained glass were mystical. There is a room which houses master piece paintings.... More

Very nice place . The architecture is amazing and it is dated back to the beginning of 16th century. There are also the tombs of Vasco da Gama (Important portuguese navigator) and Luiz Vaz de Camões (the most important portuguese poet) amongst others inside the monastery. More
