The Santa Clara Monastery was covered in sacking and scaffolding as there are huge renovations going on. Disappointing but understandable.

A very small site but extremely interesting history for the area. Be sure to take the tour and climb the bell tower for the best view of Coimbra.

Author Victor Paul Scerri and my interview with the sister of Santa Clara In awe toured into no less than paradise unfolding 16 century history and exploring and gardens of pure bliss. Nothing can prepare one for the magic this place has to offer. Shared with passion http://www.nicewriters.com

It was a cloudy day when we arrived in Coimbra. So, we explored the opposite side of main town, Coimbra. A few bridges connect both sides. We picked the most striking and colorful one and seagulls always rest for a while. Most people came to this side to see the old monastery. But we first headed to the new one.... More

This church is not visited as much as the old church down at the riverside, but I thought it was lovely. It has a pretty cloister with roses and a tiny fountain, but the hightlight is the church itself. You are asked to be very quiet when visiting, and as there are not many visitors it is incredibly atmospheric. We... More

I found a normal convent, anything to remark as an amazing (out of normal). But nice place, some curiosities, but still many arrangements running...

The Monastery of Santa Clara a Nova is located at Alto de Santa Clara. When the River Mondego inundated the old Monastery of the Poor Claire Nuns (Santa Clara-a-Velha) founded in the 13th century, the King Joao IV authorized the construction of a new monastery on an elevated position on the La Esperanza Mountain, and this happened in 1647.
