I hired a mountain bike and made the climb up from the coast. It's a beautiful ride around the rim on the gravel roads. Make sure you ride anti-clockwise and you'll get the steep climbs on tarmac and long sweeping downhills on the gravel. Not a technical ride at all, but a bit of puff needed to make the 2K... More

You can't got to the Azores and not see this.. It's breathtaking, we climbed to the top of the hotel to get an even better view, but any view on a clear day is well worth the drive. Didn't get to do a hike, but next time I will!

We enjoyed hiking around the lake. We were lucky it was a clear sunny day and we got some stunning photos. We drove down to the lakes as well. We went several times and found different view points each time. Take a picnic and enjoy the views.

To me, this is the number one sight to see in Sao Miguel and maybe all of the Azores? On the right day, it is absolutely spectacular and you will come away with photo that don't look real! I went twice in my lifetime and could not see a thing as it can be covered in fog and mist. For... More

Really nice environment. We took a jeep tour to go over there. The jeep can reach places where a bus, taxi or rented car can never come.

The place has the feel of an alpine hamlet, though without the nice cafés and restaurants. Anyway, the drive in and out is terrific, and there is good walking around most of the lakeshore on roads. You can also hike in from the rim of the caldera if you're intrepid. There are many picnic spots as well. Lovely.

Such beauty is exciting. In the Azores, in particular on the island of São Miguel, we can experience unique sensations arising from the natural beauty and the aesthetic sense (in perfect harmony) human intervention. Magnificent!

When you would like to do the walking around the lakes on the top of the Vulcano take a taxi up to the start of the walking trail. Than you don't have to walk along the roads next to the cars.

This is obviously one of the highlights, not just of Sao Miguel, but also the Azores. However, Vista do Rei, the main and supposedly famous viewing point was pretty awful. There were a quite a lot of parked cars, souvenirs stalls and at least one cafe. To make the scene worse there was the remains of a hotle development that... More
