Lagoa do Fogo is higher up so while driving up expect your ears to pop along the way and when you get there expect that the clouds may have moved in and you can't see a thing... This was our experience the first time we went up. The next time we went, it was a beautiful sunny day and the... More

The drive up to the viewpoint along windy mountain roads is spectacular in and of itself. The first day we visited, we just looked down at the lake from the viewing area above. It was an amazing sight. It was so beautiful that we decided to return the next day when we had more time to hike down into the... More

We visited San Miguel a year ago with a cruise stop and went for a drive to see Lagoa de Fogo (Lake of Fire). It was a visual masterpiece and we vowed to return and hike the trail to the bottom. So here we are, this time for a full week on the island. From the third miradour (lookout) down... More

We only viewed it from the viewpoints, but the next time I go there I will do as many travelers and walk down to the shore (30 minutes down, 45 minutes up, according to local guides)

Fogo is absolutely breathtaking given the right weather conditions and it generally appears to be clearer in the mornings than the afternoons, when the cloud has built up. There are lots of trails around the lake for walkers and hikers and the vistas alone are worth the journey. Highly recommended, but do try and keep an eye on the weather,... More

We've seen the Lagoa from above, in the road. The day was a bit foggy but it worth the visit anyway. Next time will try to go near the water. Beautiful!

As we found out, don't bother waiting for perfect weather to visit the lookout over the lake. We went 3 times and it was in the clouds every time. I guess that was part of the charm. The drive to the top is awesome!

It would be nice to hike in the area, and if the weather was warmer we would have. It is nice that it is a protected area, that won't be developed. You can tell you are higher in altitude as the vegetation changes.
