Oasis of tranquility - must do on the island

There are some nice views of this lake from the road the goes from Ribeira Grande to Ponta Delgada. It is good to stop at the view points on the road.

Stunning when you look from the edge of the crater (I mean the view point where the above picture was taken), but just head down to the lake and then left along the bank until you get to a small sandy beach and you are up for an unforgettable walk and view. Go for a swim in the crystal clear... More

We hiked from the top down to the lake, and then walked for quite a ways around the lake. The water was beautiful for swimming. The hike was a perfect length, about an hour down and another hour back up. We spent about 4 hours total - relaxed on the beach and swam for awhile - magnificent scenery.

The trip might be difficult, but the locals are always willing to help. As soon as you get there, its totally worthwhile. One of the most beautiful ponds I've seen. It also has some trails for the adventurers. Unfortunately I went with family, so we could not do that.

About a kilometer down the road from the top (heading North) is an area to view the lake. You can walk down to the lake from here. I'm overweight, 56yrs old and have a heart condition and it only took 18 minutes to walk down and 23 to walk back. It was well worth it; the lake has sandy shores,... More

A very nice hikking trail from the southern coast leads you to this isolated and beautiful lake. the coolness of the levada was welcomed in a quite hot day.

Beautiful when sun is shining, nice walking trail. Not sure if it's possible to around the whole lake.

If you visit the lake on a sunny, it is a wonderful place. We just admired it from several miradouros, because we think the view is much nicer from above than from beside the lake.

Little did we know what treasures awaited us after we decended a thousand steep steps to the volcani crater lake known as the Lake of Fire. Disappointing really, as there was no fire, literally not even a small flame. After we gained consciousness after the shock of this realisation and the stair marathon, we started to enjoy to take for... More

The day we went up, Lagoa do Fogo was too foggy to see. Sao Miguel offers several volcanic crater lakes, and my airbnb host said that this one is the hardest to see (I believe it is the highest). If I could pick one spot on Sao Miguel to go to, it probably wouldn’t be this one, since chances are... More
