Hadn't been before rest of group had, last time they had seen exhibition of ceramic elephants very colourful. Knew they probably wouldn't be there .. They weren't ... They talked about the water features including an underground water system with a glass walkway over it I was looking forward to that. No water on the surface all little water ways... More

Spent a half day at Silves, visiting the town, the museum and the castle. The town was a little disappointing but the old Moorish Fort was worth the visit for the extensive views. Take in the museum set in the old town walls where you can purchase a ticket which also includes entry to the fort itself.

A visit to Silves was on the agenda so we boarded the local train from Meia Praia which is on the Lagos to Faro line. The first tip is to take your passport if you are over 65 as they give you a 50% discount (they do not accept photocopies). When you arrive at Silves expect a 20 minute walk... More

With a big car you may have some problems to get around in the city center. The castle is well restored and has panoramic vies over city and surroundings. Not much else to see but worth 3 Eur entrance.

Ignore the previous reviewer, you can easily drive up and park near the Cathedral for free. It's next to the castle- just follow the signs for it as you drive in. Anyway on to the castle. I have been to a lot of castles in my time, call me a castle enthusiast, if you will. I don't ask for a... More

Great history but be careful to park out of town and not get stuck in the narrow streets - dangerous

This is better preserved and maintained than many other castles in the area. For children, this has a much safer castle wall to climb than others because the ground inside the castle comes nearly up to the wall, plus the walkway is wide. There's a cistern you can enter. In the ground within the castle you can see the walls... More

Well worth a visit if you are in Silves. The castle offers great views of the area and the cafe is worth a visit. There is a decent climb through the charming town although watch out for the very smooth cobbles. Not great in smooth soled shoes.
