The Silves Castle with it's hilltop location was built by the Moors between VIII and XIII century, on the remnants of Greek, Roman and Visigoth strongholds. King Sancho I, along with Crusader army conquered the city in 1189. The Moors retook the city in 1191. Not until 1920, King Afonso III took back the castle and city of Silves. Today,... More

This is a really well preserved piece of history. It's a long climb to the top of the hill where the castle is found and best done slowly. The middle of the road is paved with limestone which can be slippery, the left and right side of the road are paved with blackstone which is safer for walking. You have... More

As you drive into Silves, one of the first things you see is the castle. It. Is. Impressive. Very imposing, the wall stretches for quite a distance. And as you drive in, you are at the bottom of a hill while the castle is at the top, which adds to it's allure. After driving the little windy roads that lead... More

Wandered up to castle after dropped off at bus stop. Very pleasant stroll. Well worth entry fee (under 3 euros) to wander around the walls. Fabulous views.

Silves is a brilliant place, the walk up to the castle, through the cobbles passed quaint shops and then walking round the castle seeing views for miles. Well kept historic place - the cathedral is worth a visit too. Wear good shoes as the cobbles can be very slippy. Great relaxing place with lots of coffee shops to frequent

We went to Silves on a dreary day. The town has a nice feel to it and you can imagine how imposing it must have been entering the city in the 13th century looking up at the castle rising up on the hill. The castle is worth entering as it only costs you 2.80 eur p/p, however the inside is... More

This is a very well preserved castle with lovely views over the surrounding countryside Interesting exhibition on the preservation of the Iberian lynx. Some of the ruins inside were being repaired so were inaccessible at the time of writing.

Based from our Olhos de Agua hotel we took the EVA bus via Albufeira to Silves, which took us less that an hour and a quarter, a comfortable ride. The castle, right in the middle of Silves, is visible from the whole area, having a commanding place in the middle of town. For the 3.50 euro entrance fee you can... More

The castle is very well preserved and good to look around. The only issue which we had was we wanted more information. There was nothing written in English anywhere to tell you about this castle. A simple example "who was it built to defend against". I do feel that this an easy addition to the castle with occasional information signs... More
