Overall Silves is a nice place to visit, particular as the Algarve compared to Lisbon has less historical sites to visit. Overall it was nice but not spectacular. The castle is an empty shell, nice to visit when passing but keep expectations under control. It is a shame, as the castle has great potential.

A must see attraction which offers great views of the river and beautiful town. Huge storks circling the buildings below are an added bonus!

An impressive castle facade looking from outside and wonderfull views from the castle walls. Have to say, that walking around them not too save with very small children, but it was fine for my 8 year old. It is full of history and very well looked after. Was very nice warm day in November on our visit, so I've enjoyed... More

I am asking everyone to avoid using the ticket office in the Algarve, especially near the Paladum Hotel. They are known as 'Paradise Tours'. Myself, my husband and my daughter booked 3 trips with them. The first trip was to Faro. The coack arrived 30mins late, the driver then drove irratically with a coach full of people and to add... Great attraction. Superb views, brilliant location and amazing architecture. Moorish construction that has stood the test of time. Went around with my elderly in laws and they found the place accessible. Cheap day out and reasonable priced cafe inside.

Having caught the local bus to Silves we walked up to the castle, need to be fit or take it steady as the climb is steep. Castle is impressive from outside with good views over the town and countryside from the castle walls. Shame there is so little information given about the history of the castle and most of it... The walls of the castle from the outside are impressive but once you are inside there is very little left of what must have been! The walk around the inside and the views over the area are good. There is a rest area in the internal gardens and the café but very little else of interest especially to history buffs!

LONG walk UPHILL, parking very difficult. Rarely any English langage, little inside, can be difficult walking, paths, rills (water courses,) esp. if older etc. WARNING two castles at Casta Marima( Port. on Spanish border, MUCH worse.

The history surrounding this majestic castle is impressive and the views over Silves are amazing. One gets to walk around the castle walls as well as see a room reserved for the memory of the local mountain cat (lynx).

If you are going as a history buff, you may wish to avert this site. The Castle itself has been butchered with an awful red brick garden made up in the middle, and the most peculiar looking cafe in the center. There is no history to find here. The walls have some lovely views over them, no complaints there. There... More
