This is a wonderful little museum just up the street from the Harmony Hotel. As you travel from room to room, you get a real feel for Ghent/Flanders life over the centuries and over the decades. Highly recommended!

I read other reviews before deciding to put this on my list of things to see today. Other reviews led to a curiosity about the place. It was a quirky place, to be sure! Be sure to ask about the origins of this alms house, the history of the donors is totally fascinating! The route is a little helter-skelter, and... More

as there were no english booklets explaining the context or history of this site we were always a bit puzzled about what was coming next - all very entertaining firstly you are pointed to a church which houses pictures and music of matching bands since 1881. No idea why! the film presentation however showing the potraits of band members through... More

Although only one room had any information in English, I enjoyed this museum right up until the last room. There, I picked up a postcard to look at it. it was presumably intended for child visitors. A woman snatched it out of my hand saying 'no, no, no'. I presume she was a volunteer. There was really no need to be... More

This quirky and fascinating museum is my second-favourite place to visit in Ghent. The fixed displays of room sets across the ages are so funny, and there is always a 'feature' exhibition - this time we visited it was all about marching bands. Well - who thought that would be so interesting! There was a really thought-provoking and visually stunning... More

Found it a little boring. Not really interesting for me at least. Just some old stuff placed in rooms.

Our first stop upon arriving in Ghent was the Gravensteen, and honestly, I was not that impressed with the castle. So our next stop, the Huis van Alijn, was a giant step up, in terms of interest, quality, variety and capturing the imagination. The museum is in a former orphanage/school, and the exhibits are arrayed in a series of rooms... More

By enterring this museum, you go back in to history of normal people. The nice thing is, that, off course depending of your age, you will most probably recognize a lot of things, like old radio's, first record players, orange furniture, Mastermind and Electro (the games). And the museum is located in a beatifull building, like there are that many... More

This was interesting but unfortunately not much info in English. Loved the rooms through the 50s, 60s and 70s. Very small cafe which isnt signposted and staffed by unfriendly man!

Because of a temporarily exhibition on wind band music, I have visited since many years the Alijn House Museum. There are three departments: 1. Introduction on the wind band music in Flanders: picture slideshow, some exhibits and wind band music as soundtrack. 2. Old furniture from the past 100 years, including toys and school 3. Furniture of an old pharmacy,... More
