The former medieval port of Ghent is now a beautiful open air lounge area. When it's sunny be prepared to share this spot with hundreds of young locals who will be a bit noisy, drinking and littering. But you can escape this on the numerous terraces that invite you to have a drink yourself.

Highly recommendable to fellow travellers for holidays and business in Flandre. It was the reason why I stayed at Ghent whenever I visited Belgium during the past 11 years. There were many hotels and good restaurants nearby. During the summer evenings, both canal banks were seated with many people, mainly young men and women. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Stayed in the hotel Harmony on the side of the canal in this area. No parking available but very centrally located, and very pretty.Lots of restaurants and cafes and about 10 minute stroll from the "historic centre" makes it an area very much in vogue.

Just walk along the canal and admire the medieval homes, and the scenery. I loved just standing there and looking around!

The Kraanlei connects the old centre with the area where the restaurants are so you defintely need to pass there when visiting the city. Nice street with some nice little shops and restaurants.

The Kraanlei is not the top of the medieval quays in Ghent, but is nice for a stroll around. Located conveniently between the Vrijdagsmarkt and the Gravensteen, each day trip to Ghent should pass here.

It is one of the reasons people travel. Step back in time and see Flemish architecture at its best. It is a night time must see.
