We visited on a Sunday with my three nephews aged 7, 8 and 9yrs of age. Plenty to do. Excellent value for money. The underground trip was very informative and educational. Thanks to our tour guide Ian steel...... Enjoyed the train ride which we had to pay for but this wasn't a problem as the rest of it is free.... More

We arrived at the museum at 3pm, as we weren't expecting to spend very long there. This was a mistake, as it is far more interesting than the name implies! We were lucky and managed to get on an underground tour ( you normally have to book a few hours in advance) which was fascinating. However, the tour lasts around... More

OK, you know about victorian kids in pits, Scargill & Thatcher, ponies & props. But there is a lot more to coal-mining, old and new. this museum will amuse, scare, inform, entertain. the best bit is the men, old miners who tell a yarn and have a laugh.

A fascinating and entertaining insight into coal mining from the beginning which developed into the current modern machinery techniques used today, all in the setting of a former mine itself. The underground tour is definitely the highlight and well worth it at £3 each (refunded if you have the heart to request). Strictly over 5’s only, and they will ask.... More

The tour into mine is very interesting - humbling - educational - and even funny especially if BOB is your guide. It's like a personal show with the chuckle brothers. Honestly you need at least 4-5 hours to get round it all. Shame some of the interactive bits not working.

Myself, the wife and our 10 year old grandson had a fantastic trip to the National coal mining museum. On the pit top you can take a ride on the paddy train, see the old pit head showers and lockers, see the the pit ponies and take a look at mining artifacts in the museum. But the highlight of the...
