Travel not too far back in time when children and families went down the pit. Travel below ground in pitch darkness and experience first hand how it used to be all with an experienced miner in tow.

Had a really great visit to the museum. Even on a damp November day there is more than enough undercover exhibits to fill a full afternoon. The exhibits are fascinating and tell the story of life underground as well as the mining communities above ground. This is all left in the shade by the underground tour around the mine working... We had a lovely day here, the trip underground was excellent as only 4 of us so we got all the attention, loads of school kids behind us on the next visit down! People here have the Yorkshire friendliness which you come to expect from this area. Smashing day thanks very much YMM

We have just returned from a visit to the Mining Museum, Absolutely fantastic. Cant wait to tell my family about it!...We are from the North East and my Dad was a coal miner for 30 years at Lynemouth and Ellington pits...now I really understand why he never said anything about his job repairing the coal belts!....I have to praise all... Myself and the wife booked for the 1.30pm underground tour after travelling up from Watford. We were lucky, as we got there we saw a large number of school children milling around, but they had just been on their tour, so when it came to our turn there was only four adults. The first thing to say is about our... More

This is one of the best UK tours I have ever been on in my life, the 60 minute underground mine experience is not only mindblowing in terms of how deep underground you go, but also because the tour guides who are all ex-miners themselves are genuinely funny and informative right the way through, never a dull moment, they bring... Well worth going, my children loved getting smudged with coal! Lots to see. You buy your token £3 for the lift down which can be refunded should you choose. We didn't get a refund but chose to donate to museum.

Hat a wonderful half day out. We booked for an underground trip into the mine itself on line, which was a good move as the day was busy with visitors. While we waited for the allocated time there is an interactive exhibitions, an outdoor playground and a nature walk to keep you busy and there is a cafe, unfortunately closed... More

The museum is free, the underground tour £3 but refundable if you wish, plenty to see and do for all ages including the pit ponies. Plenty of car parking free too, can't fault the place really no reason not to have a visit.

On arrival at the reception you have to pay £3 per person for a token, although only if you want to go down the mine, the rest of the museum is free. You can get a refund in full at the end of the tour, if you wish. However, we didn't as we felt that £3 each was a very... More
