Nice building, nice collection

Ok, the collection is not very big. But it is nice, with nice people. And, in contrast to Tourcoing, they show their treasures: Two great paintings of Édouard Manet. If you are... read more

if there is a manual how to mess up a museam they followed it to the letter. there are for instance big size paintings from Louis Gallait but tne middle of hall is blocked by a mysterious black square in order to go prevent you from overseeing the whole painting. Also some red painted walls give a awkward feeling when... More

The museum has been completely neglected, as there is trash all over, the paintings are poorly displayed and the few pieces of outstanding art have to be searched for. I pray the Tournai city fathers and mothers take more pride in their city, which could be a jewel attracting many tourists. As it is, we were happy to leave.

It was advertised with a long list of "names" - in fact there were just one or two - often drawings - to the names. Disappointing visit.

Like other reviewers I was expecting both an interesting building and a good selection of paintings that are flagged up by the tourist guides. (We were using DK EyeWitness Travel) Our visit gave the impression of a museum in transition, no access to the upper floor and a limited display of paintings, poorly hung on the lower floor. Some paintings... More

I was disappointed to see this was bottom of all the attractions in Tournai. The building is quite unusual in itself being one of the last designs of Horta. The circular foyer with a purple winged hippo suspended from the ceiling was well worth the entry fee.For such a small town I felt the museum was well worth visiting.

The collection is very limited. The write-ups had me expecting more paintings by Rogier van der Weyden, I could see only one. The building was an ugly lump, none of the art nouveau splendour and lightness I had expected from the architect Horta.

My wife and I visited the Musee des Beaux-Arts Jan. 19. We are interested in Victor Horta designed Art Nouveau buildings and hoped the collection would be interesting. The whole visit was a disappointment. The collection is poorly displayed with the occasional spotlights that no doubt are fading the paint colors. The name plates are placed often 2 meters away... for the price you pay, you'll get to see some fine works of very known painters: Rubens, Manet, Monet, Vanderweyden, Toulouse-Lautrec... Also the building is from the hand of one of Belgians most famous architects, Victor Horta. Don't expect a Louvre, but anyway an impressive collection for such a relatively 'unknown' town by tourists.

The guidebook said the price was 3.50E, but we were charged 6E. Unfriendly front desk, with no prices listed. When we asked where the price was marked, we were shown a postcard, saying this was for a special exhibit, which had already ended. The museum has a Roger Van der Weiden and a Breughel, neither top works of those artists.... More
