My wife and I visited the Musee des Beaux-Arts Jan. 19. We are interested in Victor Horta designed Art Nouveau buildings and hoped the collection would be interesting. The whole visit was a disappointment. The collection is poorly displayed with the occasional spotlights that no doubt are fading the paint colors. The name plates are placed often 2 meters away...

for the price you pay, you'll get to see some fine works of very known painters: Rubens, Manet, Monet, Vanderweyden, Toulouse-Lautrec... Also the building is from the hand of one of Belgians most famous architects, Victor Horta. Don't expect a Louvre, but anyway an impressive collection for such a relatively 'unknown' town by tourists.

The guidebook said the price was 3.50E, but we were charged 6E. Unfriendly front desk, with no prices listed. When we asked where the price was marked, we were shown a postcard, saying this was for a special exhibit, which had already ended.
The museum has a Roger Van der Weiden and a Breughel, neither top works of those artists....

The only museum that Victor Horta designed and builded. Very nice exposition: from Dürer till Manet!

The paintings are wonderfull. Only a few rooms are open. No guards. Needs reparting urgently!!!

Luckily, art nouveau architect Victor Horta did not only built mansions for the rich and famous but also he designed some splendid buildings with a public function. And like he was able to open houses and make them less dark, he breaks here through the classical composition of 19th century museums. Surprising see-throughs are pleasant for the visitor, ... and...
